Vehicle Details

The Hyundai IONIQ is available in three forms; hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all electric. It's a sleek and stylish hatchback that's designed with pure efficiency as its number one goal, aiming to combine the needs of today's motorists with tomorrow's environmental goals.

Design and Practicality

From a design perspective, Hyundai placed a great deal of emphasis on aerodynamics when drawing up plans for the IONIQ. The drag coefficient (which measures how well it slips through the air) of its coupé-style shape is just 0.24, and that's class-leading.

From a practicality perspective, the IONIQ seats five people, and the boot is an impressive 443-litres - more than a typical family hatch and slightly less than you might find on a mid-size SUV. The rear seats fold down flat, too.

The hybrid batteries are fitted underneath the rear seats, and so there's no real impact on interior roominess.

Equipment and Technology

The IONIQ is pretty well kitted out as standard, featuring alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, cruise control, and touchscreen multimedia as standard.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity is included too, as is a rear-view parking camera. Standard safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane keep assist.

Other advanced technology includes the sat nav on the electric model that gives you a clear radius around your current location as to how far you can travel on the current charge. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid models get active air flaps to assist powertrain cooling, too.

Driving and Performance

Hybrid models are fitted with a 1.6-litre petrol engine that combines with an electric motor to use fuel in the most efficient way - meaning there's no plugging in.

Plug-in hybrid models can be plugged in and charged up, giving them an electric range of up to 39 miles, and when the juice runs out it automatically switches into being a hybrid again, giving you a further 600+ petrol-powered miles.

The all electric variant has a range of up to 194 miles, and can be charged up to 80% capacity in just 57 minutes - faster than many smartphones!
