Introducing the new Kia Stonic

Blue Kia Stonic compact SUV parked outdoors in a modern architectural setting

Enter the new Kia Stonic, a compact crossover with a touch of SUV attitude in one smart-looking package, created for those who want a smaller car but need a bit more room than a regular hatchback.

Completing Kia's line-up of practical SUV-shaped cars, which includes the popular mid-sized Sportage and larger 7-seat Sorento, the Stonic is fresh and lively-looking, with a silhouette that's likely to appeal to younger drivers, with enough standard tech and safety systems to raise an eyebrow or two among the most hard-to-please drivers.

Landing with one and a half powertrains, a full-petrol and the same but as a mild hybrid, and enough space for a small family or a bunch of friends to be ferried around, the refreshed Stonic is ready to take on a range of everyday challenges.

Design and Practicality

The Stonic combines sleek, smooth lines with chunky SUV appointments, such as a higher ride height and muscular styling, giving you the best of both worlds while appealing to those who wish to step away from the traditional hatchback norm. Its exterior design features polished touches such as contemporary LED headlights and a bold-looking lower grille that nod to its SUV DNA.

Inside, it's solidly built with the usual smart Kia aesthetic, with comfortable seating up front and lots of head and legroom for even the tallest people, and enough space and headroom in the back for a pair of adults comfortably, or three at a squeeze.

352 litres are also readily available to eat up the weekly shop or the a few bags of luggage, while a 1,155-litre space is opened up by dropping the back seats - ideal for those that need additional room when carrying larger items.

Technology and Safety

Upfront, you have a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that blends into the driver's display, with well-defined graphics and an easy-to-use interface. Plus, there are enough physical buttons so that you don't get bogged down in drop-down menus and system navigation.

For those that do want the latest tech, the Kia app lets you start the car, operate the climate control, unlock the doors, and access other useful features. Ready your car from the comfort of your home before stepping out into the unpredictable Great British weather.

For the safety-conscious driver, the Stonic offers a range of driver-assist features. This includes:

  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 1.5 (FCA 1.5)
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA)
  • Smart Cruise Control (SCC)
  • Highway Driving Assist (HDA)
  • Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA)

Economy and Performance

The latest Stonic lands with two powertrain options. A perky 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine pushing out a competent 98bhp, delivering 0 to 62mph in 11.0 seconds, and the same engine in a mild hybrid version with a 48-volt electric motor added on. The additional motor ups the power to a healthier 113bhp and is there to deliver better fuel economy.

Both powertrains are matched with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission (DCT), and are competent performers in their own right - the automatic does make the overall experience smoother, so is the best match for those wanting a super straightforward experience. On the road, the ride height is lower than most SUVs, more like a hatchback, and the performance is agile and dynamic enough to ensure tricky manoeuvres are a breeze.
