Ranger models offer a number of strong factors such as:

  • Multiple bodystyles/versions
  • Striking pumped-up looks
  • Strong payload and towing capacity
  • Well-equipped
  • 2WD and 4WD options
  • Manual and auto transmissions

Engines and Driving Experience

Up until 2019, three engines were available with the Ranger. A 2.2-litre TDCi four-cylinder turbodiesel with 132bhp, reducing slightly to 128bhp after the facelift in 2016. This engine was also available with 147bhp, or a slightly more powerful 157bhp after the 2016 facelift.

Finally, a 3.2-litre diesel was also available with 197bhp. Each engine comes with a lot of low-down grunt, making them excellent for towing. Although it's worth noting, the smaller engines have to be worked harder than the more potent 3.2-litre.

A 2.0-litre EcoBlue four-cylinder turbo-diesel unit replaced these engines in 2019, offering several different power outputs of 128bhp, 167bhp and 210bhp. These updated engines may be smaller, but offer more torque, smoother performance and are also a lot quieter and more refined.

Ranger models have always handled well, if a tad unsettled at lower speeds due the truck nature.

Practicality and Running Costs

As a robust pick-up truck the Ford Ranger offers great practicality. Various models mean different load bed dimensions, ranging from a maximum load length of 2,317mm in the Single Cab to 1,549mm in the Double Cab. Maximum load width is 1,560mm across all models.

In terms of payload, the Ranger can handle payloads between 1,033kg to 1,269kg - although the Raptor is the exception, with a reduced 640kg. Towing capacity of the Ranger is 1,800kg up to 3,500kg.

Double Cab models are the most practical in terms of occupant space with four seats, whilst Single Cab models have two seats.

Running costs aren't too bad considering this is a sizable robust truck. Economy ranges from just under 30mpg, up to 40mpg. Servicing is also very reasonable, as is often the case with Ford vehicles, and can be completed by Evans Halshaw at any of our dedicated Ford service centres.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Due to the pick-up truck nature, interior quality on the Ranger is robust and durable. Facelifted 2016 onward models feature a much more attractive 8-inch central display screen with the familiar Ford Sync infotainment set-up. Instrument clusters use analogue dials, complemented by digital screens for a more modern look.

New driver assistance tech was added on facelifted models too, such as Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Keeping technology. Special edition models get further enhanced specifications.

As for safety, the Ford Ranger was the first pick-up to get a five-star Euro NCAP rating upon launch, and has since gone on to add more up to date safety features ensuring the Ranger continues to set the standard.

Is the Ford Ranger right for me?

If you are in the market for a dependable, good looking and practical pick-up truck, it's hard to ignore the Ford Ranger.

Competition is strong, especially from the likes of Toyota with the somewhat indestructible and properly robust Hilux, which continues to set the benchmark. VW are also strong in this field with the Amarok.

The Nissan Navara is perhaps more on level par with the Ranger, but the Raptor models edge it for Ford. Whichever of these trucks you decide upon, the Ranger is by no means a bad choice, and will be less expensive in some cases.
