Engines and Driving Experience
The engine setup is perhaps the biggest leap for Chery with the Tiggo 9. Whereas older models like the Tiggo 7 and 8 came in both internal combustion engine and PHEV variants, the Tiggo 9 has one main powertrain - and it’s a powertrain that is at the cutting edge of power and efficiency.
The Chery Tiggo 9 is a Super Hybrid PHEV. It has a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine combined with two (front and rear) electric motors. The 34.5kWh high-capacity lithium-ion pack battery offers an impressive 87-mile electric-only range - a massive upgrade for weekend trippers who want to save on fuel costs.
Combined with that, the engine setup provides 422-428 bhp and 428lb ft of torque, making it by far the beefiest Tiggo model yet.
What does this mean on the road? Confident, bold road presence with powerful everyday driving capability. The vehicle is noticeably quicker than many rivals and the hybrid system gives it a genuinely game changing electric range for a PHEV.
In short: the Chery Tiggo 9 is at home both on city streets and long-distance road trips.
Practicality and Running Costs
The Chery Tiggo 9 is a chunky seven-seat SUV. The reclining back seats make it a very flexible vehicle: it fits seven adults comfortably, but the boot space can also be extended from around 143 litres to a sizable 819 litres for weekends away.
The front and second row are particularly spacious and the storage layout is practical. Overall, the Chery Tiggo 9 is an ideal family-sized SUV that can handle multiple occupants plus a fair bit of luggage.
Running costs can, of course, vary. The standout feature of the Tiggo 9 is without a doubt the plug-in hybrid system. In particular, the 87-mile electric range (compared to just 56 miles in the next-best model, the Tiggo 8). This could mean serious fuel savings not just for trips around town, but on longer journeys, too. In fact, this is one of the longest electric ranges for any plug-in hybrid on the market.
Test-condition mpg ratings are always a little overstated, but most drivers confirm the fuel economy of the Tiggo 9 is decent at around 470mpg (for mixed driving). If you charge frequently at home or at work and use mainly EV mode for daily trips, fuel use can be very low or even negligible for a lot of the time.
Interior, Technology and Safety
As always with the most recent Tiggo SUVs, interior design is, at least aesthetically, above average. Especially when you consider the price point. Thoughtful touches really make the difference here.
The front and middle-row seats are heated and ventilated and configurable ambient lighting enhances the sense of space and luxury. There’s also handy climate control and Silent Glass to give a real sense of privacy.
Tech is also a major selling point with the Chery Tiggo 9. Like many other SUVs you’d find in a much higher price range, it offers a truly modern range of nice features. That includes a large 15.6-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster that gives you full control over wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and the 'Hello Chery' virtual assistant.
Safety is also at a very high level, with extensive ADAS like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, automatic emergency braking, and automatic parking assistance.
Drivers can feel confident on the roads with the Tiggo 9’s comprehensive safety features and enjoy plenty of advanced tech specs more commonly found in more luxury-level SUVs.
