Blue Chery Tiggo 8 Parked in Field with Family

The Chery Tiggo 8 may not be the industry's best-known name, but it competes with the Skoda Kodiaq and Hyundai Santa Fe as a spacious seven-seat SUV packed with convenient features. The main advantage? It comes in at a much lower starting price.

This makes the Tiggo 8 one of the best used cars for families on the market right now. It’s bigger than its Tiggo 7 brother (although both are new to the UK) but still streamlined enough to cut a sporty figure on the roads - and its multiple powertrain options leave buyers with a lot of choice when it comes to fuel economy.

There’s plenty to get excited about with the Chery Tiggo 8. Let’s explore some of its main specs and features below.

Engines and Driving Experience

The Tiggo 8 comes in two main powertrains: first up, the classic internal combustion engine variant.

The standard petrol-powered Chery Tiggo 8 takes things up a notch from the Tiggo 7 (although it retains the familiar 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine). Expect a reasonable 145bhp and 202lb ft of torque - plenty for high-level acceleration and pulling power. Overall, this model is comfortable and calm at steady speeds and has light, predictable steering dynamics.

Next up, we have the super hybrid (PHEV) version. This is where the Tiggo 8 really shines; it’s by far the most popular variant. And with good reason. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine plus electric motor (18.4 kWh battery) provides a strong 201bhp and 269lb ft of torque - plus a handy 56 miles of pure electric range.

Another notable difference between the two variants is acceleration. The hybrid model offers a noticeably more lively and responsive experience than the petrol version as much of the torque comes from the electric motor. And as for electric-petrol transitions - it’s smooth and often imperceptible.

Overall, the Chery Tiggo 8 (in both its iterations) is competent and predictable for daily driving. It’s not the sportiest car out there - it won’t take you off-road, but it will provide smooth and comfortable city-driving.

Practicality and Running Costs

Family Inside Chery Tiggo 8

Practicality is a big plus in the Chery Tiggo 8. As opposed to the Tiggo 7, which has just 5 seats, the 8 has seven seats, making it perfect for larger groups. Of course, legroom is tighter in the third row, so it is generally better for small children or occasional use.

One downside of the extra seats is, of course, less boot space. The capacity is just 117-litres with the seats up (but 494-litres with them down). If you’re going on longer trips with only a few passengers, this makes the Tiggo 8 more than sufficient. But if you consistently need more boot space, it may not be for you.

As for running costs, the Chery Tiggo 8 offers modest, though good, fuel economy. The petrol-only variant offers a relatively low 36.2mpg - not bad but far from industry-leading. However, the PHEV variant makes significant strides on that figure with a huge 201.77mpg (although expect that to be slightly lower in real-world conditions).

Don’t forget, too, that the PHEV version will mean lower road tax if you exploit the electric range to the fullest. This is the cheaper option in the long run.

Interior, Technology and Safety

The quality of the interior is one of the biggest surprises of the Chery Tiggo 8. Especially given its low price point. Not only does the Tiggo 8 feel noticeably roomier than the Tiggo 7, it’s also finished with high-quality synthetic leather upholstery and soft‑touch plastics that give the vehicle a more upmarket feel than the price suggests.

Higher trims even have significant upgrades like heated and ventilated seats and dual‑tone ambient lighting.

The dashboard ties together with a large 15.6-inch central touchscreen and an accompanying digital driver display. This is where the driver can control the vast majority of the car’s tech - that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and the 'Hello Chery' voice control.

Chery has put a lot of effort into safety tech, too. That covers a huge number of airbags (up to ten) as well as various driver assistance features like Adaptive Cruise Control and Autonomous Emergency Braking.

In short: the Chery Tiggo 8 has all the tech specs you’d expect from an SUV of this class, and everyday drivers will find it more than convenient for most trips

Is the Tiggo 8 right for me?

For those looking for an upgrade on the Tiggo 7 or simply a larger, more expansive seven-seater SUV, the Chery Tiggo 8 ticks a lot of boxes. It’s an extremely comfortable ride and comes packed with safety features.

Sure, it doesn’t offer top-level driving dynamics. But it does offer good fuel efficiency and smooth driving for most users.
