Introducing the BYD ATTO 2
The BYD ATTO 2 is the brand's most accessible SUV in the UK. It sits at the compact end of BYD's growing range and punches well above its weight on features, technology and value. Available as a fully electric model or now as a plug-in hybrid, it gives you plenty of options depending on how you drive and where you charge.
Whether you're commuting into the city, doing the school run or heading somewhere lovely for the weekend, this is a car sized for real life. Despite being 145mm shorter than the ATTO 3, the ATTO 2's wheelbase is only a touch smaller, meaning rear passengers get more space than the exterior dimensions might suggest. With the electric version offering up to 261 miles of range and the plug-in hybrid capable of over 620 miles combined, when it's time to get away, there'll be no holding you back.
Design and Practicality
The ATTO 2 has an upright, no-nonsense silhouette with clean lines that feel better thought-through than most cars in the class. BYD's familiar Dragon Face design ties it neatly into the wider family while giving the ATTO 2 its own identity at the compact end of the range. At the rear, the Möbius ring-inspired light bar stretches the full width of the car, giving it a distinctive and recognisable look on the road.
Inside, the minimalist dashboard keeps things uncluttered and well organised. BYD's Cell-to-Body construction does away with the floor hump that usually eats into rear legroom, so the middle rear seat is a proper seat, not just an afterthought. There's good headroom throughout, and rear legroom is better than you might expect.
Boot space is a solid 400 litres with the seats up, rising to 1,340 litres with them folded down, handy when you've been furniture shopping.
Technology and Safety
Technology is one of the ATTO 2's strongest suits. For a start, Google Built-in comes as standard, complementing the 12.8-inch touchscreen. This means you get Google Maps, Google Assistant and access to apps via the Play Store, without needing to mirror your phone. If you prefer your own apps, you can also use wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Ahead of the driver, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster keeps everything clearly in your eyeline, while wireless smartphone charging and 'Hi BYD' intelligent voice control — which lets you adjust settings, get directions and control features without lifting a finger — mean the little details are taken care of too.
On the safety side, the ATTO 2 covers the essentials well. A rear-view camera comes as standard across all variants, with a full 360-degree camera and blind-spot monitoring added on higher trim levels. You also get automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and rear parking sensors throughout the range. It's a thorough safety package, rounded off by a six-year vehicle warranty and eight-year battery guarantee.
Engines and Performance
The ATTO 2 comes with two different powertrains, and whichever you go for, there's plenty to like.
The fully electric version is powered by BYD's Blade Battery and a front-mounted electric motor, delivering up to 201bhp and a 0 to 62mph time of 7.9 seconds. It's smooth, quiet and immediate in the way only electric cars can be. With a top-spec range of up to 261 miles, it'll handle most daily driving without you having to give range a second thought.
The plug-in hybrid uses BYD's DM-i system, pairing a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor. The clever bit is that the petrol engine rarely drives the wheels directly. Instead, it acts as a generator, keeping the battery topped up while the electric motor does most of the work. Most of the time, you'd never know there was a petrol engine under the bonnet — and with up to 93 miles of electric-only range on offer, you may not need it for days. Combined range exceeds 620 miles, so you can take longer trips in your stride, too.
Charging
Both versions of the ATTO 2 are easy to live with when it comes to charging, just in slightly different ways.
The electric ATTO 2 supports rapid DC charging, with the top-spec model capable of charging from 10 to 80 percent in around 25 minutes at a compatible public charger. That's handy for a quick top-up while you grab a coffee on longer journeys. At home on a wallbox, a full charge overnight is all you need for most daily driving. The electric ATTO 2 also supports Vehicle-to-Load, so you can power devices, like a camping fridge or an inflatable paddleboard, directly from the car's battery.
The plug-in hybrid takes care of itself rather neatly. The DM-i system balances battery and petrol automatically, and a full charge at home takes under three hours. For most daily trips, you'll barely use the petrol engine at all.
