Engines and Driving Experience
Two engines are available with the Mustang. The legendary 5.0-litre V8 or the more reserved 2.3-litre EcoBoost. Both offer typical muscle car performance, with 0-62mph taking around 4.5 seconds in the manual (the auto is slightly quicker) or around 6 seconds in the EcoBoost, again with the auto being slightly quicker.
Driving the Mustang is quite the experience. It's a large car with a long bonnet after all, but this adds to the theatre the car gives each time you get behind the wheel, along with the rear-wheel drive power and grumble of the V8 - it all adds to the experience.
Of course, the EcoBoost is much quieter, but you have to compromise for the rise in economy. Both cars hold the road well, and are very good on long journeys.
Practicality and Running Costs
A muscle car is never going to be the most practical of cars, but the Mustang at least has a few surprises, such as a very spacious boot with 408 litres of capacity. Due to the car's sweeping coupé body, the rear seats are only really suitable for children.
As for running costs, the name V8 and economy don't go together very well, but then that's kind of expected in a muscle car. Therefore expect to see around 20mpg in the V8, and around 30mpg in the 2.3-litre EcoBoost.

Interior, Technology and Safety
A large interior ambiance matches the Mustang's muscular exterior. Dials are large and clear, while the dashboard is rather chunky and suits the muscular nature of the car. Cool toggle switches give even more muscular character, and ensure you know you're driving something out of the ordinary.
A large central infotainment screen ensures tech is well taken care of with phone and music connectivity easily managed. Later facelifted cars get digital instrument clusters and clearer displays, as opposed to earlier models that featured analogue dials.
Safety has been updated on later Mustangs, with pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking and a lane-keeping aid. The Mustang scores respectably for adult and pedestrian protection as a result.
Is the Ford Mustang right for me?
If you are after a car that will turns heads and is full of theatre each time you get behind the wheel, the Ford Mustang is a great choice, especially when buying used.
The V8 is the full-on, whole package, and will give the most smiles per mile, but if miles per gallon is more your thing, then the 2.3 EcoBoost is probably more your flavour.
Either way, a Mustang is sure to make each journey more interesting, that's for sure and used prices are extremely attractive when compared to similar aged performance cars.
