The Isuzu D-max is a hugely popular pick-up truck that offers incredible value in a strong and dependable package. The Isuzu truck name may not be as well-known as models such as the Ford Ranger, VW Amarok, Toyota Hilux or Nissan Navara, but in the truck world, the Isuzu D-Max is hugely respected, especially abroad.

Isuzu first introduced the D-Max to the UK in 2012, with multiple face-lifts along the way. In 2020/2021 it saw a prominent update (DL20).

Economy, Towing, and Performance

Engines tend to be the 1.9-litre turbo diesel that came to the range in 2017, and should see economy of between 30mpg and 33mpg as per the stricter WLTP standards.

As for general performance, the D-Max feels beastly but not in a speed sense, more in the work horse sense. With 0 to 62mph taking around 13 seconds, it's not rapid, but with decent off-road manners and a generally enhanced sense of refinement and comfort, the D-Max is a good pick-up truck package.

If you're looking to use the D-Max for towing, the unbraked trailer limit is 750kg (as is the case with all commercial vehicles), whilst braked the D-Max can tow between 2,500kg and 3,500kg depending on spec.

Bodystyles, Payload, and Capacity

As for bodystyles, there are Single Cab, Extended Cab and Double Cab versions. These will all feature specific payload and capacity differences.

Single Cab models feature two doors and two seats, whilst Extended Cab models come with secondary rear doors and occasional-use rear seats. Double Cab models feature four proper doors along with four proper seats.

As for payloads, these range from 1,070kg and 1,205kg depending on exact spec.

Capacity of the load bed will differ depending on the bodystyle of D-Max you go for and is as follows:

Load bed length of Single Cab/Extended Cab/Double Cab = 2,315mm/1,805mm/1,495mm
Load bed width = 1,530mm across all versions
Load bed depth = 490mm across all versions

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Interiors were enhanced further from 2020 as older models did have a strong utilitarian vibe to them.

Touchscreen infotainment looks much better in later models (DL20) with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment screen modernising the cabin with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto coming standard.

Leather is also standard on DL20 updated models too, along with a reversing camera for enhanced safety. This updated model is also the safest pick-up you can buy according to Euro NCAP with items such as cruise control, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition and lane departure warning and prevention coming standard.

Double Cab models get blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert as standard too.

Is the Isuzu D-Max right for me?

The Isuzu D-Max is a strong and dependable truck. Later models from 2020 with the DL20 updates are worth looking out for as they come with impressive standard kit, and are generally much more of a polished truck all-round.

Older models do have their utilitarian charm though, and will still appeal to those looking for a good value truck for much less money.

Alternatives include the very popular Ford Ranger, whilst Japanese alternatives like the Nissan Navara and textbook Toyota Hilux will always appeal if you're looking for a better overall solution, but all three of these trucks will tend to command a significant premium over a similar aged D-Max.
