Typically, if you're in the market for a supermini that's inexpensive to run then you'll find yourself looking at the Ford Fiesta or Vauxhall Corsa. Both of these are great cars and would serve you well, but neither of them offer the same level of value as the MG3.

Engines and Driving Experience

It's not uncommon for cars at the cheaper end of the market to be quite plain to drive. However, the MG3 stays true to its heritage and offers a decent amount of fun through the corners because of its direct steering.

On the move, the MG3 isn't as refined as more expensive alternatives in this class, but that's to be expected. Don't be put off though, it feels comfortable around town, which is where this car thrives.

The MG3 is only available with a single engine: a 1.5-litre petrol that produces 106bhp and achieves 0 to 62mph in 10.9 seconds. It isn't the quietest engine in the world, but it will return circa 43mpg without too much effort, so at least that's a bonus.

Practicality and Running Costs

As is the case with most superminis these days, the MG3 is only available with five doors. This makes life easier when fitting a child's seat because the rear doors open nice and wide. Inside, four adults shouldn't find any issue getting comfortable, although adding a fifth could be a bit of squeeze.

Head to the rear and you'll find a 285-litre boot, which is about right for this class of car. Although it's worth noting that the Dacia Sandero - another budget supermini - boasts 328 litres of capacity.

MG offered later versions of the MG3 with a 7-year/80,000 miles warranty from new. The warranty can be passed onto future owners, so it's worth keeping an eye out for examples that have remaining warranty. Affordable servicing is available for the MG3 through all Evans Halshaw retailers.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Despite the low cost, the MG3 offers a respectable interior design that visually looks up-to-date. The materials don't match the quality of most rivals, but they feel robust enough to deal with daily life.

The MG3 was given a mid-life refresh in 2018, which resulted in a rethink of the available specifications. The old entry-level model, called the 'Explore', came with Bluetooth and LED daytime running lights.

However, this has now been replaced with the 'Excite', which gets 16-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen and air-conditioning. If you want extra luxuries then we recommend going for an 'Exclusive Nav' model, as this benefits from a reversing camera and cruise control.

If you're looking for an affordable supermini that's practical and well-equipped, you can't argue with the value offered by the MG3. You have to sacrifice a bit of refinement and quality compared to traditional rivals, but it makes up for this with a low price tag.
