Introducing the New Kia Rio
Believe it or not, the Kia Rio has been around since the turn of the century. During that time, it has developed into a dependable and popular supermini that offers an alternative to the traditional supermini crowd.
The Rio has undergone a major transformation over the past decade, with a series of design refreshes and technological upgrades having been implemented with every update.
Now entering its latest generation, the New Kia Rio has improved in all the right areas. New efficient powertrains, including Kia's first petrol 48V mild-hybrid system, have been introduced, while the latest driver aids and safety features have been included. The result is a supermini that has the mannerisms of a larger car, but without the associated running costs.
Design and Practicality
Tasteful updates to the exterior of the New Rio give it a refreshed and uncluttered appearance. The assertive headlights sit either side of the distinctive 'tiger-nose grille', while the general body shape flows effortlessly from the front to the rear of the car.
The interior layout is ergonomic and therefore everything is easy to find; it simply makes sense and feels instantly familiar. Thanks to the raised roofline, there's a generous amount of head room inside for adults sitting in the back. There's also plenty of adjustment for the driver to enjoy.
With the rear seats up, there is 325 litres of boot space available. This does extend to 1,103 litres once they have been folded down though.
Technology and Safety
Generously equipped across the range, it's hard to imagine anyone feeling shortchanged with the New Rio they have bought.
For example, the entry-level model gets features like air-conditioning, Bluetooth with music streaming, and automatic light control as standard. Work your way up the range and you get access to other desirable technologies, such as Kia's intuitive 8-inch infotainment system that comes with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™.
There's a number of safety features throughout the New Rio, which include twin front, side and curtain airbags on all models. You also get access to clever technologies, which include:

- Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA)
- Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS)
Economy and Performance
New Kia Rio is the first Kia powered by a petrol Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) powertrain. The new 'EcoDynamics+' powertrain pairs Kia's new 'Smartstream' 1.0-litre T-GDi (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct injection) engine with Kia's 48V MHEV system; maximising fuel efficiency.
Two power outputs are available with the new EcoDynamics+ powertrain; 99bhp and 118bhp. Both versions are equipped with a Drive Mode Select system, allowing drivers to customise their drive and choose between 'Eco', 'Sport' and 'Normal' modes.
There are a further two petrol engines available with the New Rio; the new 99bhp 1.0-litre T-GDi engine and a new version of the naturally aspirated 1.2-litre engine, with a power output of 83bhp.
You can choose between the new six-speed manual transmission or Kia's seven-speed auto dual-clutch transmission with the 1.0-litre engine, whereas the 1.2-litre comes with a five-speed manual.
