Volkswagen ID.3 rear

The Volkswagen ID.3 is an all-electric hatchback that has a spacious interior and a usable everyday range.

It was only a matter of time before Volkswagen developed a standalone electric car, with the ID.3 having been designed to offer a realistic alternative to the popular Golf. The brand have also pitched the ID.3 between affordable options such as the Nissan LEAF and more expensive models like the Tesla Model 3.

Reasons to consider the ID.3 as a used car purchase include:

  • Good range
  • Zero-emissions driving
  • Volkswagen build quality
  • Strong performance
  • Spacious cabin

Range and Driving Experience

Volkswagen ID.3 front

Typical of an electric car, the ID.3 offers seamless acceleration. The absence of a traditional engine means the driving experience is whisper-quiet and more refined. Performance is strong - another trait of electric cars - which means the ID.3 gets away from the lights with vigour.

Electric

  • 58kWh Pro: Equivalent of 143bhp, 0 to 62mph in 9.6 seconds, range of up to 264 miles
  • 58kWh Pro Performance: Equivalent of 198bhp, 0 to 62mph in 7.3 seconds, range of up to 264 miles
  • 77kWh Pro S: Equivalent of 198bhp, 0 to 62mph in 7.9 seconds, range of up to 336 miles

You can expect the 58kWh batteries to recharge in just over six hours when using a wallbox home charger. The larger, 77kWh battery takes about seven and a half hours to achieve a full charge. Naturally, these times are considerably reduced if you use a public rapid charger.

Practicality and Running Costs

Volkswagen ID.3 rear seats

Although the ID.3 is shorter than the Golf, it has more room inside because there's no engine or gearbox taking space up in the front. As a result, passengers in the rear have plenty of legroom to enjoy, which complements the excellent head space perfectly.

Another benefit of there being no engine is that the boot is bigger in the ID.3 compared to the Golf (385 litres versus 380 litres). Sure, the difference is marginal, but the ID.3 is more compact so will be easier to drive and manoeuvre.

The ID.3 occupies insurance groups between 27 and 30 (out of 50), which is pretty good for an electric car. Servicing will be notably cheaper compared to a car with a traditional engine since there are less mechanical items to maintain, and can be completed at Evans Halshaw retailers.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Volkswagen ID.3 interior

A futuristic interior design is what we've come to expect from electric cars, and the ID.3 blends this concept with instant familiarity. For example, everything is largely controlled via touchscreens and touch-sensitive buttons. The cabin looks more modern because of this, yet feels easy to navigate and live with.

Volkswagen decided to name the range with their target audience in mind. 'Life' models are designed to offer everything you need for daily driving, and come with LED headlights, satellite navigation, keyless entry and all-round parking sensors.

'Family' models are geared towards comfort, and benefit from climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and a variable boot floor for maximum convenience. 'Max' variants are the most expensive, but get adaptive suspension and an augmented reality head-up display.

The ID.3 scored highly for adult and child occupant protection during its Euro NCAP crash test, where it achieved five stars. Features that helped it attain this include:

  • Driver fatigue alert system
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Emergency call control with eCall
  • Tyre pressure warning system

Is the Volkswagen ID.3 right for me?

Volkswagen have already had a strong take up on the ID.3 following its introduction, which is hardly surprising given its usable everyday range, practical interior and advanced technologies. In essence, if you're in the market for an all-electric hatchback, the ID.3 should prove to be a good choice.

Before you commit to a car, we would recommend looking at the competition. The Nissan LEAF is a polished all-rounder that will cost less to buy, as will the electric Hyundai IONIQ. On the other hand, it's impossible to ignore the Tesla Model 3 because of its range and associated infrastructure.
