White Fiat 124 Spider Exterior Front

The Fiat 124 Spider is a front-engine, rear-wheel drive roadster (otherwise known as a convertible), that offers retro looks and a fun driving experience. It's a great alternative to Fiat's 500C convertible, if you want something that looks more like a traditional top-down sports car.

Coming at a lower cost than some of its rivals, the 124 Spider allows you to enjoy the great British roads, with your roof down on a hot summer's day, for a reasonable cost. Although it costs less than its competitors, the 124 Spider has a range of great features that make it a top choice, such as:

  • A smooth ride
  • Various bits of available equipment
  • Good fuel economy for a sports roadster
  • Simple engine line-up

Discover the benefits of the Fiat 124 Spider in more detail below.

Engines and Driving Experience

With only one engine on offer, the Fiat 124 Spider comes with a 1.4-litre, 170bhp turbocharged petrol engine that's capable of going from 0 to 62mph in a respectable 7.5 seconds. Manual and automatic transmissions are available, allowing the 124 Spider to achieve fuel economy figures of up to 44.1mpg and 42.8mpg respectively.

The Fiat 124 Spider comes with a softer suspension setup than some of its competitors, which allows it to have a smoother and more refined ride. Even under speed and when cornering, the 124 Spider deals with bumps and cracks in the road fairly well for a convertible.

However, the soft suspension setup comes at a cost. More body roll is present in the 124 Spider than some of its tighter-sprung rivals, meaning sharp turns can be testing, but long, sweeping bends are great fun.

Practicality and Running Costs

As you'd expect with most convertible sports cars, practicality isn't its forte. Coming with only two seats, there will only be space for the driver and a lucky accomplice. Instead of an electrically-folding roof, the 124 Spider opts for a traditional manually-folding soft top. Whilst slightly more work than pressing a button, putting the roof up or down won't cause many issues as it's straight forward and quick.

Due to the extra space required for the roof, boot space is fairly sparse. You'll get 140 litres, which is similar to some of its rivals and enough for a couple of soft bags of luggage for weekend trips.

Due to its sporty, soft-top setup, running costs aren't cheap, but they're not unreasonable either. Starting at insurance group 25 (out of 50) and increasing to group 26 dependent upon specification. All Evans Halshaw dealerships are also well-equipped to deal with any servicing or maintenance requirements.

Interior, Technology and Safety

An ergonomical and comfortable interior can be found within the 124 Spider, but it isn't as flamboyant as what you'd expect from a two-seat, sports roadster. All of the dashboard controls are within reach of the driver, making life easier when adjusting the settings.

Climbing aboard, there is enough space for the average adult. However, those over six-feet tall may find the wind rushing through their hair as the top of their head peaks over the windscreen. A good amount of technology can be found as standard, including cruise control and keyless go.

Spending a bit more to get a better specification may be worthwhile as you could receive a touchscreen infotainment system as well as heated seats for those winter drives with the roof down. There's also a range of safety equipment available, including:

  • Parking sensors
  • Driver, passenger and side airbags
  • Traction control
  • Anti-lock braking system

Is the Fiat 124 Spider right for me?

If you're after something that offers a fun driving experience, then the 124 Spider is a great option. Whilst not the most practical, it's a suitable car for an engaging weekend drive or for daily use if you don't need much space.

If you like the look of the 124 Spider but want something even sportier, the Abarth 124 Spider is based off of the same platform. If you're working with a bigger budget and want something more premium, the Audi TT Roadster and BMW Z4 are excellent candidates.

Nonetheless, the Fiat 124 Spider is good fun, and looks great thanks to its retro styling queues.
