Used Mercedes-Benz GLS Exterior, Front

The Mercedes-Benz GLS is an extra-large luxury SUV with three rows of seats and space for up to seven passengers. It sits at the very top of the Mercedes-Benz line-up of lifestyle-focused SUVs, with only the iconic G-Class costing more.

This third-generation GLS was the direct replacement for the old Mercedes-Benz GL, and has been on sale in the UK since 2020. Reasons to buy a used GLS include:

  • Magnificently quiet and comfortable
  • All the space you could ever need
  • Seating for up to seven adults
  • Revolutionary technology
  • Upmarket styling and prestige badge

Engines and Driving Experience

Used Mercedes-Benz GLS Exterior, Driving

Mercedes-Benz describe the GLS as the "S-Class of SUVs", and that statement largely refers to the driving experience. Complete and utter luxury is the goal - and the GLS achieves it with effortless performance and standard-fit air suspension that soothes away all the lumps and bumps both on and off-road.

Look out for used examples with "Active Body Control" fitted. This system uses cameras to see what the surface of the road in front of you is like and pre-emptively adjusts each suspension corner individually, giving you the best ride quality possible.

There are two very different engine options: a 3.0-litre diesel that puts out 325bhp, badged GLS 400 d, and a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with 604bhp, named the GLS 63 S. Choose the diesel for more reasonable running costs, and the petrol if you're seeking outright performance.

Practicality and Running Costs

Used Mercedes-Benz GLS, Interior, Boot Space

The GLS is a huge vehicle, and in terms of interior practicality, there aren't many cars that can match it. There are three rows of seats as standard, and even adults can sit comfortably in the very back seats, meaning the GLS is a genuine 7-seater.

Boot space is absolutely enormous, with 890 litres of room behind the second row and 355 litres even when all the seats are in place - the same amount as the boot on an A-Class. The GLS' chief rival, the Range Rover, has a 909-litre boot but doesn't offer three-row seating. BMW's X7 does though, although the 750-litre boot isn't quite as big.

As for running costs, well, the diesel isn't too bad on fuel at 25 to 30mpg, but the V8 petrol sure is thirsty. Insurance will be in the higher (if not highest) groups, and servicing and maintenance won't be cheap on a car like this. Evans Halshaw dealerships will be happy to service your GLS for you, or choose Stratstone Mercedes-Benz for more specialist care.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Opulence is the order of the day inside the GLS, and Mercedes-Benz have delivered in spades. You'll be blown away by the quality of the leather seats, soft touch materials, oak wood and brushed aluminium trim. It really is fit for a King, or Queen.

Technology is pretty incredible as well. From the augmented reality sat nav and voice control assistant housed within the excellent MBUX infotainment system, to the five-zone climate control and twin-touchscreen rear entertainment package, the GLS really is on another level.

Mercedes have also laden the GLS with some of the most advanced safety systems of any car, including:

  • Blind spot monitoring with braking intervention
  • Route-based speed adjustment
  • Active steering assist to prevent you straying from your lane
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Autonomous emergency braking

Is the Mercedes-Benz GLS right for me?

Buying a used Mercedes-Benz GLS is a no-brainer if you want the highest levels of refinement, luxury and practicality, so long as you're willing to pay for it. They're expensive but with good reason, and the cost is entirely justified when compared to the competition.

Speaking of competition, you should definitely consider the BMW X7, Audi Q7, Land Rover Range Rover, Lexus RX and the Volvo XC90 if you're looking for a full-size luxury SUV - they're all brilliant in their own distinctive way.
