Engines and Driving Experience

BMW X7 Rear

A selection of petrol and diesel engines with varying power levels are available with the X7, these include:

  • 3.0-litre diesel (badged 30d) with 265bhp
  • 3.0-litre petrol (badged 40i) with 333bhp
  • 3.0-litre diesel (badged 40d) with 340bhp
  • 3.0-litre diesel (badged M50d) with 400bhp
  • 4.5-litre petrol (badged M50i) with 530bhp

The 265bhp version of the X7 will be ample for most, providing fine luxury and a dynamic drive with up to 43mpg possible, and a 0 to 62mph sprint of 7.0 seconds. For such a sizable 2.3 tonne SUV, these figures are rather impressive.

Higher-powered petrol engines are even quicker, taking between 6.1 and 6.3 seconds to go from 0 to 62mph, whilst returning just over 30mpg for the petrols, and around 36mpg for the diesels.

Those who want the best the X7 has to offer will want the M50d or range-topping M50i. The M50d can go from 0 to 62mph in just 5.4 seconds, whilst still returning up to 40mpg. The range-topping M50i devours the 0 to 62mph sprint in just 4.7 seconds, but you'll be visiting petrol pumps a lot more with 22mpg economy, not that you will mind with this particularly impressive dynamic luxury SUV.

Practicality and Running Costs

BMW X7 Boot

Being the largest SUV that BMW make, the X7 isn't lacking space or practicality. With seven seats as standard, adults can effortlessly get comfortable in the back and not feel cramped, like they may feel in some 7-seater models.

You can also get 6-seater X7 models which have three rows of seats. This is via two rows of captain's chairs behind the front seats, ensuring enhanced comfort for their passengers.

326 litres of boot space is on offer, with all seven seats in place, which is pretty good and gives supermini levels of boot space. Use the X7 as a 5-seater and the boot space is a massive 750 litres.

As a flagship luxury SUV, the BMW X7 isn't going to be cheap to run. All models fall in insurance group 50, which is the highest possible group, meaning premiums will reflect this.

With economy between 22mpg and 43mpg, the X7 isn't bad for a vehicle of its size. Servicing will also be relative to the luxury and size.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

BMW X7 Interior

Interior ambience and quality of the BMW X7 is typical of a luxury SUV. Therefore, there is lots of premium feeling materials and beautifully laid out switchgear, complemented by a digital instrument cluster and smart central 12.3-inch infotainment screen.

The screen is easy to use and is arguably one of the best in the business, featuring sat nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as the ability to change multiple settings.

There is no official Euro NCAP safety score for the X7, partly due to its exclusivity, but its sibling, the BMW X5, scored a full five-star rating for reference. Features available include:

  • LED headlights
  • Tyre pressure monitoring system
  • 360-degree camera
  • Active park distance control
  • Automatic parking
  • Remote 3D view
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Traffic sign recognition

Is the BMW X7 right for me?

If you are in the market for a luxury SUV, then the BMW X7 should be on your shortlist, especially if you require six or seven seats.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS should also be considered thanks to its 7-seat ability and a good shout if you want a slightly bigger boot capacity. It won't be as dynamic as the X7, however.

There is also multiple Land Rovers in the form of the Range Rover Sport and Land Rover Defender, which are both available with seven seats, but these won't be as luxurious as the BMW.

There is also the full-size Range Rover to consider, but this can only offer five seats, but is arguably more luxurious than the X7 and certainly more impressive off-road.
