A coupé SUV with all the power and drama of a bona fide M car sounds like quite the recipe. Here we are taking a look at the BMW X4 M Competition, more specifically the first generation model which was launched in 2019, although a tweaked facelift version was also offered from 2021.

With SUVs continuing to be popular, being a bit different and giving an SUV a coupé-like body was a brave move by BMW but one that appeals for sure. And when you add in the legendary BMW M treatment, this X4 M Competition offers sleek style, epic performance and fine ability - while still being practical.

In short, the BMW X4 M Competition offers:

  • Decent SUV practicality
  • Sports car levels of dynamics and performance
  • State-of-the-art technology
  • Iconic M car heritage

Engines and Driving Experience

BMW X4 M Competition Rear

The BMW X4 M Competition shares a lot in common with the BMW X3 M Competition. Essentially, the X4 M Competition uses a sleeker coupé-like body whilst its X3 M Competition sibling is of a more familiar SUV shape.

Total power output is exactly the same as the X3 M Competition too, so you get a colossal 503bhp, produced via the 3.0-litre 6-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. This is deployed to the road via an 8-speed automatic transmission, and kept in check by the excellent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system. This ensures a 0 to 62mph time of just 4.1 seconds.

Of course, the BMW X4 M Competition does not offer the exact mesmerising dynamics of a BMW M3 or M2. But for a tall riding SUV, the BMW X4 M Competition is composed and exciting to drive making it one of the most engaging performance SUVs out there, and not far off an actual M car in its nature.

Practicality and Running Costs

BMW X4 M Competition Boot

The BMW X4 M Competition offers a capacious 525 litres of boot space, which is 25 litres less than the BMW X3 M Competition - but this was always going to be the case with a lower roofline and coupé-like body. You do get more boot space than that of another coupé performance SUV rival in the form of the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 Coupé, which offers 500 litres.

Inside, the X4 M Competition offers plenty of space for five adults, with generous amounts of head and legroom.

It's thirsty, however, with 25mpg on average, although this will climb on a motorway run. Insurance, servicing and tyres will all reflect the increased costs associated with performance SUV ownership, meaning the X4 M Competition is not a cheap vehicle to run. Servicing can be carried out at any Evans Halshaw dealership, although for more specialist care we recommend Stratstone BMW.

Interior, Technology and Safety

BMW X4 M Competition Interior

Premium BMW ambience is ever present in the BMW X4 M Competition, with fine craftsmanship, solid build quality and quality material choices throughout the cabin, accompanied by various leather choices depending on specification.

The dials look digital, but are in fact analogue. If you want fully digital dials in your X4 M Competition, then the facelifted BMW X4 M Competition will appeal, but the analogue digital look style is very clever in its presentation and keeps the SUV looking bang up to date.

As for safety, the BMW X3/X4 platform as a whole gained the full five-star Euro NCAP rating, and so the X4 M Competition falls under the same BMW X3/X4 family umbrella. This is thanks to available safety tech which includes:

  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane-keeping assistance
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Cruise control
  • Active Blind Spot Detection

Is the BMW X4 Competition right for me?

If you are after a performance SUV, the BMW X4 M Competition is a cracking choice for those who want a sleeker looking SUV.

Of course, if you require a little more practicality, and a more familiar SUV shape, then the BMW X3 M Competition still has the important M car status, and is a bit less unique, if that's your style.

If you do like the idea of a high performance coupé SUV, but don't want a BMW, there is always the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 Coupé that you could take a look at.
