BMW X3 M Competition Front

If you have your heart set on an SUV, but lust after legendary M car performance and dynamics, then the BMW X3 M Competition may be right up your street. Here we focus on the first generation model launched in 2019, although a slightly tweaked facelift version was also available from 2021.

It's no secret that BMW X Series models are popular, so it made good sense to offer a version of the X3 with the iconic M badge (like many BMW models), giving this X3 M Competition serious style, performance and ability - while still being hugely practical.

In short, the BMW X3 M Competition offers:

  • Incredible practicality
  • Sports car levels of performance and dynamics
  • State-of-the-art technology and safety
  • Legendary M car heritage

Engines and Driving Experience

BMW X3 M Competition Rear

A regular BMW X3 is a fine SUV to drive, and models in the range aren't exactly slow, but the X3 M Competition is on another level entirely, having been breathed on from the BMW M department.

Total power output is a monstrous 503bhp, produced via a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, deployed to the road via an 8-speed automatic transmission, and kept in check by the excellent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system. This ensures a 0 to 62mph time of just 4.1 seconds.

Of course, the BMW X3 M Competition does not offer the text book dynamic showcase of its legendary BMW M3 sibling, but it really isn't miles away in terms of ability and driver engagement. For such a large SUV, the X3 M Competition stays composed even when grabbing it by the scruff of its neck. This is thanks to a trick rear differential, stiffer body and uprated sports suspension.

Practicality and Running Costs

It's relatively common place that sports and performance cars are not the most practical, however, when you have a performance vehicle that happens to also be an SUV, things are a little different.

The BMW X3 M Competition therefore offers a capacious 550 litres of boot space, the same as the regular BMW X3 and its main rivals in the form of the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 and Audi SQ5.

Inside, the X3 M Competition offers plenty of space for five adults, with generous amounts of head and legroom.

It's a thirsty beast, however, with economy figures not bettering 25mpg on average, although this will climb on a motorway run. Insurance, servicing and tyres will all reflect the higher costs associated with performance car ownership, meaning the X3 M Competition is not a cheap vehicle to run. Servicing can be carried out at any Evans Halshaw, although for more specialist care we recommend Stratstone BMW.

Interior, Technology and Safety

BMW X3 M Competition Interior

The familiar premium BMW ambience is ever present in the BMW X3 M Competition, with solid, well made material choices throughout the cabin, accompanied by various leather styles and colour depending on specification.

The dials may look digital, but like other BMW models of this era they are in fact analogue. To the untrained eye, they do look digital, and either way still look fantastic. If you want fully digital dials in your X3 M Competition, then the facelifted BMW X3 M Competition will appeal.

As for safety, the BMW X3 platform as a whole gained the full five-star Euro NCAP rating, and so the X3 M Competition falls under the X3 umbrella. This is thanks to safety tech available which includes:

  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Cruise control
  • Active Blind Spot Detection
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Lane-keeping assistance

Is the BMW X3 M Competition right for me?

If you are after a performance SUV, the BMW X3 M Competition is a cracking choice that will warrant beaming smiles from ear-to-ear.

Of course, if you require a little more of a striking alternative, the BMW X4 M Competition is based on the X3, but features a sleeker coupé body, despite also being an SUV. You will sacrifice some practicality though.

There is then the rivals from Audi and Mercedes-Benz, in the form of the Audi SQ5 which arguably has a better interior, but isn't as dynamic as the BMW. Elsewhere, it's the same story with the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63, which again will wow with its interior but won't have as much engagement as the BMW.
