The 8 Series made a return to the BMW range in 2018, after the first generation sold until 1999. With almost two decades away, the second generation perfectly captures the original's sleek silhouette and grand touring capabilities.
Just like the original 8 Series, which enthusiasts refer to as the E31, the second generation 8 Series is known as the G15. As well as an 8 Series Coupé there's also Convertible (G14) and 'Gran Coupé' (G16) versions.
No matter which second generation 8 Series version you opt for, you're going to experience superb refinement, a comprehensive choice of engines and specifications, as well as a car that can munch miles with little effort; it's the kind of car perfect for a European roadtrip.
Engines and Driving Experience
The 8 Series engines are textbook BMW, offering power, refinement, performance and excellent grand touring ability. For reference, we'll focus on Coupé versions, whilst Convertible and Gran Coupé stats are almost identical.
You'll find silky and powerful petrol options, as well as refined diesel engines too, with all 8 Series models using an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Petrol options start with the 840i which produces 333bhp via its 3.0-litre 6-cylinder engine, with rear-wheel drive, good for 0 to 62mph in 5.2 seconds.
Alternatively, there's a diesel 840d with xDrive all-wheel drive. It, too, uses a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder but has a little more power with 340bhp, resulting in a 0 to 62mph time of 4.8 seconds.
The M8 Competition is the range-topping 8 Series model, but is more reserved for keen drivers who don't mind the firmer ride. Alternatively, there's an M850i xDrive available too, which is sort of an M lite version, like that of the BMW M135i, and despite not being a full fat M car, it's still hugely fast, taking just 3.7 seconds to go from 0 to 62mph.
No matter which 8 Series you opt for, an impressive drive is always guaranteed.
Practicality and Running Costs
To say the 8 Series is a svelte coupé, you still get a large boot, which is one of the reasons this car is ideal for grand touring; there are 420 litres on offer.
There's plenty of space to get comfy up front too, but the rear does suffer due to the swooping roofline, and therefore legroom does decrease, but then you don't buy an 8 Series for family car duties.
Being a large BMW, running costs won't be cheap. The 840i will return around 33mpg, whilst the diesel will get around 40mpg.
The M850i will average around 25mpg, but should see more on a run.

Interior, Technology and Safety
Being a car launched in 2018, and being one of the flagship models in the BMW line-up, the 8 Series features a fully-digital instrument binnacle and slick infotainment set-up with phone connectivity, DAB, sat-nav and the like.
Interiors are luxurious with leather and fine material choice, meaning getting comfortable and feeling special behind the wheel is rather easy.
As for safety, with the 8 Series being pretty pricey when new, BMW didn't scrimp as you'd expect with a car of this calibre. Carbon is used in the structure meaning it's both solid and strong, whilst a whole host of features like automatic braking, parking assistant, cruise control, collision warning and pedestrian warning make driving both safer and easier.
Is the BMW 8 Series right for me?
If you're after an ultra-stylish yet seemingly understated in its class grand tourer, the BMW 8 Series is a textbook choice.
As always, German rivals can tempt you away, like that of the Mercedes-Benz GT or Porsche 911 - however both of these are slightly more sporty and firmer.
The beauty of the 8 Series is that you can go for a regular model and grand tour in style, or go head-to-head with the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche with the M8 Competition.
