BMW M5 Competition

If you're in the market for a luxury saloon car that offers supreme levels of comfort, whilst also delivering supercar performance, the BMW M5 is one of the textbook choices.

As one of the elite super saloons, this generation of the M5 came along in 2017, known by enthusiasts as the 'F90' generation, receiving a facelift in 2020.

When new, the M5 was a six-figure car, but used, they are very appealing as you can save big over the list price.

Highlights of the M5 include:

  • Incredible performance
  • Excellent refinement
  • Quite subtle to the ones who don't know
  • Superb handling
  • Big boot

Engines and Driving Experience

BMW M5 Competition

At the heart of this autobahn stormer is a colossal 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. It produces a monumental 592bhp in standard form, which means that despite weighing a porky 1855kg, it will still go from 0 to 62mph in a mere 3.4 seconds. If you opt for the M5 Competition, you get 616bhp dropping the 0 to 62mph time to 3.3 seconds.

If you were to go for the range-topping CS version, you get 626bhp, along with bespoke gold wheels and grille, complemented by some special frozen paint finishes too. 0 to 62mph takes just 3.0 seconds.

Of course, all this performance means you'll probably be on first name terms with the staff at your local Shell fuel station, but if you go on a run you'll see around 30mpg, but around town you'll see around 20mpg if you're lucky.

It's worth it though. Being an M car the driving experience is excellent and if you like a car that feels special, the M5 won't disappoint. Yet, essentially being a 5 Series underneath, it can also turn into a fine mile-muncher and settle nicely making it a comfortable cruiser.

Practicality and Running Costs

BMW M5 Competition

Being a large saloon car, there's plenty of room for five people and with a 530-litre boot, there's high levels of practicality on offer too. Head and legroom is good and most people will be more than comfortable when in an M5.

In terms of running costs, as mentioned, fuel is going to be consumed in large amounts, and being an M car, consumables like tyres and brakes are not cheap, and you'll only want premium tyres, as 'budget' tyres on a car like this simply won't cut it.

Servicing isn't cheap, but considering you are getting a practical saloon car that can also embarrass sports and supercars, it's more than worth it. With a specialist car like the M5, we'd recommend Stratstone BMW for expert BMW M car servicing.

Interior, Technology and Safety

BMW M5 Competition

Interiors are in keeping with M cars of this era, therefore there are lots of leather and materials feel refined, well chosen and luxurious.

Later facelifted models from 2020 onward get digital instrument clusters and a revamped infotainment set-up which is fresher and very intuitive to use. That said, pre-facelift models feature digital-look instrument clusters that still appear very modern, whilst the infotainment set-up has aged very well and doesn't age the car much at all.

Safety is top-notch too, with cruise control, adaptive headlights, auto emergency braking, head-up display, parking assistant, BMW Night Vision, Driver Attention Detection and BMW Driving Assistant.

Is the BMW M5 right for me?

If you're after both excellent levels of refinement and performance, the BMW M5 blends the two together impressively.

That said, BMW's German rivals also offer similar cars that offer incredible levels of luxury and supercar-like performance.

Mercedes-AMG have the E 63 which is available as a saloon and estate, whilst Audi also have the incredible RS6 (estate) and RS7 which are both M5 rivals.

You can even take into account the Porsche Panamera or fully-electric Taycan too.

This is a fierce sector which offers some incredible cars. It's one of those we would suggest picking your favourites and identifying the right one for you with a test drive.
