Vauxhall Astra

The latest edition of the Vauxhall Astra is coming soon, and with this new facelift the popular five-door hatchback promises to reach new heights in terms of efficiency, aerodynamics and comfort levels. Read on to see what we can expect from the newest version of this great family car.

Exterior

Vauxhall has made real strides in terms of making the new Astra's exterior more aerodynamic. New design features include an engine compartment cover, deflector-shaped rear axle control arms and a full-face shutter, all contributing to a more aerodynamic body. Furthermore, the upper and lower portions of the radiator grille open and close independently of each other to improve frontal airflow. The updated underbody design reduces turbulence too. As a result of all these improvements, the Astra is the most aerodynamic car in the five-door hatchback class, while the Sports Tourer estate version (pictured) is among the best-in-class.

Performance & Efficiency

The new Astra's engine lineup offers the perfect blend of performance and efficiency, ideal for everyday driving. 1.2-litre (six-speed manual) and 1.4-litre (CVT automatic) petrol units deliver outputs of 108bhp and 143bhp respectively, for nippy performance around town and comfortable motorway cruising. These engines are brilliantly responsive, with rapid throttle response meaning 90% of maximum torque is available within 1.5 seconds of pressing the accelerator.
Alternatively, you can choose from two turbocharged 1.5-litre diesel engines delivering 104bhp and 120bhp respectively, with greater torque of 260Nm and 300Nm. The latter unit is available with a choice of six-speed manual and nine-speed automatic transmissions.
Efficiency is strong across the range with preliminary figures of 51.4-54.3mpg for the manual petrols and 60.1-64.2mpg for the manual diesels. All engines are equipped with stop/start technology as standard to save fuel and use reduction systems to minimise emissions.

Interior

High levels of connectivity and convenience await the driver of the new Astra. The infotainment systems, all compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, range from Multimedia Radio to Multimedia Navi to the top-of-the-line Multimedia Navi Pro, the latter operable by voice control and hosted by an eight-inch colour touchscreen. Vauxhall's Connected Navigation services provide real-time traffic information and online map updates for less stressful travelling, while the navigation display has been refreshed with redesigned symbols for a more modern look.
Other comfort features on selected models include wireless smartphone charging, a Bose sound system with seven loudspeakers and a heated windscreen.
Safety technology has also been upgraded for the latest Astra. It comes with a new digital front camera that is smaller and faster thanks to a faster processor. As a result, the camera is now capable of recognising vehicles as well as pedestrians, and has increased traffic sign recognition ability. The digital rear view camera, available on selected models, has also been made more powerful so that traffic behind is displayed more precisely in day and night.
For further safety, the E-call emergency function is available as an option, meaning the emergency services can be reached at the touch of a button.
