Volkswagen Scirocco side

The Volkswagen Scirocco is a stylish coupé that delivers a fun driving experience and a quality finish throughout.

Sadly, Volkswagen don't actually make the Scirocco anymore but there are plenty of examples to choose from on the used car market. The reason there are so many is because they were - and still are - a popular choice among motorists who want a more stylish alternative to the Volkswagen Golf.

There are a variety of reasons to consider a used Scirocco, which include:

  • Handsome appearance
  • Potent choice of engines
  • Volkswagen build quality
  • Good equipment levels

Engines and Driving Experience

Volkswagen Scirocco front

The Scirocco was built on the same platform as a previous generation Golf, which translated to a fun driving experience. Steering responsiveness is very good, and the brakes offer strong stopping power.

Refinement and comfort is exceptional for the most part. Be wary of R-Line models, which have larger wheels and stiffer suspension, since they aren't the most forgiving on rough roads.

Petrol

  • 1.4-litre: 157bhp, 0 to 62mph in 9.3 seconds, up to 52.3mpg
  • 2.0-litre: 178bhp, 0 to 62mph in 7.4 seconds, up to 46.3mpg
  • 2.0-litre R: 276bhp, 0 to 62mph in 5.5 seconds, up to 34.9mpg

Diesel

  • 2.0-litre: 148bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.6 seconds, up to 67.3mpg
  • 2.0-litre: 167bhp, 0 to 62mph in 7.5 seconds, up to 60.1mpg

Practicality and Running Costs

Volkswagen Scirocco boot

The Scirocco is a 3-door coupé, so naturally it doesn't offer the same levels of practicality as a Golf. There's strictly two seats in the back, so we'd recommend looking elsewhere if you have a growing family. On a positive note, headroom is respectable in the back despite the sloping roofline.

With 312 litres on offer, the Scirocco's boot is very good for a coupé, and will even grow to a useful 1,200 litres with the rear seats folded flat. The only downside is the large lip, which can make it tricky to load and unload heavier items.

Insurance groups for the Scirocco run between 18 and 34, so your annual premium shouldn't be too offensive. Your local Evans Halshaw retailer is well-equipped to carry out any servicing or maintenance requirements.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Volkswagen Scirocco cabin

Those who are familiar with other Volkswagen models will appreciate the familiarity of the Scirocco's cabin, which is well-made throughout. The low driving position and unique features, such as the small dials above the central air vents, will appeal if you want a car that's sportier than most alternatives.

Equipment levels are generally very good, with entry-level cars benefitting from air-conditioning, 17-inch alloy wheels and a multifunction steering wheel as standard. A central touchscreen features on all models, but will feel a little dated compared to more modern vehicles.

Higher-spec versions, such as the GT, get satellite navigation and rear parking sensors, while R-Line models add leather seats, 19-inch wheels and a sporty body kit.

The Scirocco scored a five-star Euro NCAP rating when it was crash tested, thanks to good occupant protection and the following features:

  • Electronic stability control (ESC)
  • ISOFIX anchor points
  • Anti-lock brakes (ABS)
  • Traction control

Is the Volkswagen Scirocco right for me?

It's a shame that Volkswagen don't make the Scirocco anymore, it's a good-looking coupé that offers a fun driving experience and a degree of exclusivity. If you don't mind compromising on practicality, then it'll make a fine purchase.

The reason Volkswagen discontinued the Scirocco is because of how good the Golf is these days. But if you're set on a coupé, then an Audi TT is worth a look at because of its upmarket styling and finish. A more budget-friendly alternative is the Vauxhall Astra GTC.
