Engines and Driving Experience

BMW 7 Series Front

With such large proportions, it's unsurprising that the most popular engine choice in the 7 Series is a diesel (badged 730d), which uses a 3.0-litre straight-six offering 282bhp. This wafts occupants from 0 to 62mph in 5.9 seconds with rear-wheel drive, or if you go for the xDrive which uses four-wheel drive, it drops to 5.6 seconds.

A more potent 740d boasts 335bhp and completes the 0 to 62mph sprint in 5 seconds flat. But to be honest, the 7 Series isn't about 0 to 62mph times. Sure, these are impressive stats but you'll be more impressed by how quiet, relaxing and luxurious the driving experience is.

For those who prefer petrol engines, the 740i mirrors the diesel's offering similar performance, with reduced economy. The M760Li is the ultimate 7 Series with a 4.4-litre petrol V8 producing 528bhp and completing 0 to 62mph in 4 seconds flat.

Hybrids are also available and again mirror the petrol and diesel versions, but offer some fully-electric driving range and enhance the refined driving experience even further.

Practicality and Running Costs

BMW 7 Series Rear

To run, unsurprisingly the petrol's cost the most, hence why the diesels are the best sellers.

Petrol models will return around 30mpg, whilst diesels will return up to 50mpg. The hybrids can be had with both petrol and diesel engines, alongside their accompanying electric motors. These can return hugely impressive economy of up to 150mpg, but cost more to buy used.

As for practicality, the 7 Series is essentially a limousine, therefore there is acres of space. Massage seats, sumptuous leathers, window blinds and a even a tablet to control stuff is going to be inviting for rear passengers, although getting behind the wheel is just as relaxing and pleasant.

The boot is massive too, with 515 litres, meaning it offers 10 litres more than an Audi A8. Although the Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers up to 550 litres.

Interior, Technology and Safety

BMW 7 Series Interior

Early cars offers excellent comfort and smart, clear crisp dials and infotainment, which can be controlled via touch or using gestures. The key is like a mini iPhone too, if you happen to find one with this spec from new.

Massage seats, night-vision and 360-degree virtual cameras means there are plenty of toys to wow your passengers or brag about at the pub. Facelifted 2019 cars come with more striking digital dials and just a generally more plush and impressive interior.

Due to the 7 Series being an exclusive car, it hasn't been crash tested by Euro NCAP, although with features such as the ability to steer itself, park itself and cameras all over the car, we would be amazed if it didn't receive top marks.

Is the BMW 7 Series right for me?

If you are after an ultimate saloon, that offers supreme comfort, unbelievable levels of refinement and impressive levels of state-of-the-art technology, the 7 Series isn't going to disappoint.

However, as excellent as the 7 Series is there are competitors to mention. The Audi A8 is another great shout, or the Jaguar XJ is worth a look too.

The BMW will probably impress more, that is, until you mention the text book staple of luxury saloon cars which is undoubtedly the sublime Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which has been the king of this class for decades and still sets the standard.
