The 3 Series is BMW's best-selling model. But why is this premium saloon the standout model in a range full of popular BMW cars? For many generations the 3 Series has been the textbook answer for the premium saloon car in a ultra-competitive market.

This is thanks to a textbook driving experience, sharp style and a superb choice of specifications and engines. In 2018 this particular generation of 3 Series became even better.

But what makes the 3 Series so good?

  • Sharp executive looks
  • An incredible choice of engines
  • A supreme driving experience
  • Quality interior feel
  • Premium image
  • Comfortable, especially over long distance
  • Available in a Touring (Estate) version too

Engines and Driving Experience

BMW 3 Series Exterior

The 3 Series has been around since the mid-seventies, giving BMW plenty of time to evolve the car perfectly over its life. This particular generation brings the 3 Series bang up to date with sharper, mature looks and an attractive digital cockpit.

Consisting of familiar petrol and diesel models, it has often been regarded by automotive journalists that the 2.0-litre 320d is all the car you could possibly need, or want. This is due to the smooth power delivery, excellent economy, impressive refinement and the useful practicality it offers. It is just the perfect do everything well, daily car.

However, a 2.0-litre petrol is also available, which is still just as good for those who don't like diesel cars. An ultra-impressive 330e plug-in hybrid is also available, which is capable of over 200mpg and is faster than a few hot hatchbacks.

Practicality and Running Costs

BMW 3 Series Boot

The practicality on offer with this particular generation of 3 Series continues to be excellent. Four-doors as standard and plenty of cabin space ensure the 3 Series has no faults in the practicality stakes - there is even a Touring version on offer too.

The Saloon features a 480-litre boot capacity, whilst the plug-in hybrid sees this reduced slightly to 375 litres. This is due to the car's electrical components taking some of the space in the car's floor. The Touring offers the most boot space with 500 litres.

Running costs are attractive too, for the executive and premium nature possessed by the 3 Series. Some used cars still have servicing packs, whilst mpg achievable from all the different models is impressive too.

Interior, Technology and Safety

BMW 3 Series Interior

From 2018 onwards the BMW 3 Series received the impressive digital cockpit, but it's worth noting that the 'BMW Live Cockpit' is only available on M Sport models and above. The SE and Sport models have backlit analogue dials, which to be honest look almost digital. They are still very clear to read and give an attractive end result either way.

An 8.8-inch infotainment screen ensures cabin technology is impressive, this increases to 12.3-inches on M Sport models, with voice recognition for more convenient operation.

Safety kit as standard includes Active Guard Plus, which features front collision warning with brake intervention and pedestrian detection. Also standard is lane-departure warning and speed limit assist, along with airbags at various places within the interior.

Is the BMW 3 Series right for me?

It's easy to see why the 3 Series is BMW's best-selling model. It ticks so many boxes for ability, refinement, comfort, practicality, performance and economy. Add to the fact that it wears a prominent BMW badge and it's game, set and match.

The Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class have always given the 3 Series something to worry about, and it could be argued the Mercedes-Benz has a more impressive interior, but the 3 Series offers a more focused driving experience. It will all come down to personal taste.
