Used Mercedes-Benz GLB Exterior, Side

The Mercedes-Benz GLB is a compact SUV that manages to one-up its rivals by providing space for up to seven occupants, thanks to an extra row of seats in the back. This feature, along with its boxy SUV styling, makes it stand out in the increasingly crowded used small SUV market.

Launched in 2019, the GLB sits in-between the GLA and the GLC in the extensive Mercedes-Benz line-up of SUVs. Buying a used GLB is a good idea for many reasons, such as:

  • Three-row seating with room for seven people
  • Compact proportions that make it easy to manoeuvre
  • Distinctive, prestige styling
  • High quality and tech-packed interior
  • All-wheel drive variants

Engines and Driving Experience

Diesel automatic GLB 220 d models are the most plentiful on the used car market, with the 2.0-litre engine providing ample power (187bhp) and reasonable fuel economy (47mpg) as well as being all-wheel drive. A detuned 148bhp version of this engine is also available, called the GLB 200 d, and is two-wheel drive only.

Petrol GLBs (which are also automatic only) have proven popular too, with the GLA 200 cheaper to buy and not excessively more expensive to run, with around 40mpg achievable.

There's also a high performance variant, badged GLA 35 4MATIC. This 302bhp speed machine blasts from 0 to 62mph in just 5.3 seconds, with the engine producing a symphony of noise as you power down the road. It's one of the fastest 7-seaters money can buy.

Practicality and Running Costs

Used Mercedes-Benz GLB Exterior, Boot Space

The practicality of the GLB far exceeds its seemingly humble proportions. There are both 5 and 7-seat versions, both of which are in plentiful supply as used cars. Even (sub six-foot) adults are able to fit in the third row, although they are designed primarily for kids.

5-seat models have a 570-litre boot capacity, which is far larger than the one you'll find on a Jaguar E-PACE (425 litres). This is reduced to 500 litres for the 7-seat version, with the folding rear seats taking up a bit of room even when they're flat in the floor.

With the third row in place there isn't a tonne of room in the cargo area, and 7-seat variants of the Land Rover Discovery Sport offer a bit more space in this configuration.

Running costs aren't too bad, with reasonable fuel economy and the flat-rate tax system in place. Big 19-inch wheels will mean tyres may be on the pricier end, while servicing costs can be kept down by utilising your nearest Evans Halshaw dealer. Stratstone Mercedes-Benz retailers will be able to provide more specialist care.

Interior, Technology and Safety

The GLB's interior is in-line with other Mercedes models such as the A-Class and B-Class, with the experience dominated by the twin screens that are standard on every GLB.

These screens (7-inch on entry-level models and 10.25-inch on higher grades) house your phone connectivity, navigation, reversing camera and entertainment settings, as well as your driving data - no analogue dials here.

Material quality is of a high standard as you would expect from Mercedes, and the aluminium touches on the centre console and dashboard round off the luxury experience nicely.

Is the GLB safe? Absolutely. It recorded a maximum 5-star rating when crash-tested by Euro NCAP, thanks to features such as:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Lane keeping assist
  • ESP with acceleration skid control
  • Traffic sign and speed limit recognition (model dependent)

Is the Mercedes-Benz GLB right for me?

Overall, the Mercedes-Benz GLB provides stylish and luxurious yet practical transport, and the availability of 7-seater models gives it something of a unique selling point in the busy compact SUV segment. It's comfortable and packed with technology, while the economical engines keep running costs down.

Because of its wide range of abilities, the GLB has many different rivals. The only other small luxury SUV with a 7-seat version is the Land Rover Discovery Sport, which has a bigger boot but less room for rear passengers. The BMW X2 is a driver-focused crossover model, while the Audi Q3 is another strong contender.
