Used Mercedes-Benz CLS Exterior, Side

The Mercedes-Benz CLS is a fairly large 4-door coupé that provides added style and panache over the E-Class saloon as well as a tad more practicality than the 2-door E-Class Coupé. It provides all of the prestige and road presence that you would expect of a large Mercedes, and looks right at home outside any 5-star hotel or top-class restaurant.

The third generation, on sale since 2018 here in the UK, boasts powerful yet efficient engines that are capable of powering up to five people in total comfort across long distances without breaking a sweat. This wafting ability makes it perfect for those who spend a lot of time on the motorway. Other reasons to consider buying a used CLS include:

  • Beautifully tactile interior materials
  • Plenty of standard equipment
  • Silky-smooth 6-cylinder engine options
  • Large boot
  • Prestige badge

Engines and Driving Experience

Used Mercedes-Benz CLS Exterior, Front

Most used CLS models are fitted with diesel engines which are better suited to long-distance driving, due to their unstressed nature at high speed. They're super efficient too, with both the 2.0-litre CLS 300 d and the 3.0-litre CLS 400 d versions achieving 35-40mpg in mixed driving.

That fuel economy figure is especially impressive when you factor in the performance figures. 261bhp and 0 to 62 mph in 6.4 seconds for the 300 d, 325bhp and 5.0 seconds for the 400 d. Both versions feel quick, but the Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4MATIC+ trumps them both with 429bhp, though fuel economy is significantly worse at 25-30mpg, despite mild-hybrid assistance.

Out on the open road the CLS is a dream to drive. Comfortable suspension and a whisper-quiet interior make it an easy car to commute in, although around town and in tight car parks the car's bulk does make itself known. The standard 360° reversing camera makes parking much easier, though.

Practicality and Running Costs

Used Mercedes-Benz CLS Interior, Rear Seats

Because of its lengthy proportions, practicality of the CLS is pretty good on the whole. Rear legroom in particular is outstanding, even with the front seats all the way back there's still plenty of space for back seat passengers. Headroom for adults is compromised by the sloping roofline, but kids will be absolutely fine.

In terms of capacity, the boot is slightly smaller than the one found on the E-Class Saloon, (520 litres vs 540 litres), but is quite narrow and has a load lip that needs to be navigated. The three rear seats fold down and there is a load-through hatch for skis but overall, the Audi A7 Sportback is much better in the load-lugging department.

With regards to fuel economy, the CLS is relatively affordable to run, especially the diesel versions. Insurance is expensive however, with the CLS sitting in the highest insurance group.

Servicing isn't cheap either (these are large, complex engines that need looking after) but is inline with segment rivals from Audi and BMW. To reduce costs, you can have your CLS serviced at any Evans Halshaw dealership, or for more specialist care, check out Stratstone Mercedes-Benz.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Used Mercedes-Benz CLS Interior, Dashboard

The interior of the CLS is another Mercedes-Benz masterclass in tactile materials and stunning design. The cockpit makes you feel special each and every time you climb inside, with the soft-touch dashboard, stylish wood trim and nappa leather blended together to great effect.

Aside from the Mercedes-AMG variant, since 2018 there has only been one model grade of CLS, AMG Line, and it's incredibly well specified even without any additional option packages. Key features include 64-colour ambient lighting, fully electrically adjustable heated front seats, three-zone climate control, MBUX infotainment and a brilliant Burmester® sound system.

Safety is well taken care of, and the CLS scored a maximum of 5-stars for safety when last tested by Euro NCAP. There's an abundance of advanced tech watching your back at every turn, including:

  • Lane keeping assist
  • Speed limit assist
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • ISOFIX child seat anchor points
  • Driver, passenger, side and window airbags

Is the Mercedes-Benz CLS right for me?

A used Mercedes-Benz CLS would be a suitable purchase for someone who wants a large, comfortable car with a spacious cabin and great technology. That the CLS also provides a desirable badge and handsome exterior styling are merely added bonuses.

The only real direct rival to this generation of CLS is the Audi A7, which is more practical but isn't quite as enjoyable to drive. The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé is another option, but they're a lot more expensive than a CLS.
