Range Rover Velar Side Profile

Launched in 2017, the Range Rover Velar is all about style and making a statement. Its sleek exterior and stunning interior ensure that the Velar is arguably the most eye-catching model in the Range Rover line-up.

Billed as the avant-garde Range Rover, it sits above the smaller Evoque, but below the Range Rover Sport. And, although the Velar is easy on the eye, it still retains its family heritage by being decent off-road, too.

Points as to why the Velar may be the right used car for you, include:

  • Striking exterior looks
  • Stunning interior style
  • A multitude of engine choices
  • Decent off-road capability

Engines and Driving Experience

Range Rover Velar Driving

Diesel, petrol and plug-in hybrid Range Rover Velar models are available, these include:

Diesel:

  • D200: 2.0-litre, 201bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.2 seconds
  • D300: 3.0-litre, 296bhp, 0 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds

Petrol:

  • P250: 2.0-litre, 247bhp, 0 to 62mph in 7.5 seconds
  • P400: 3.0-litre, 395bhp, 0 to 62mph in 5.5 seconds
  • SVAutobiography: 5.0-litre V8, 542bhp, 0 to 62mph in 4.5 seconds

PHEV/Petrol:

  • P400e: 2.0-litre, 404bhp, 0 to 62mph in 5.1 seconds

Overall, the Velar takes after the range-topping, full-sized Range Rover in being ultra luxurious and comfortable. Those looking for a more dynamic drive will want to look at the aforementioned Range Rover Sport, but if a whisper quiet and comfortable ride is more your style, then the Velar hits the spot perfectly. This luxury SUV doesn't break a sweat when the terrain gets tricky, either.

Practicality and Running Costs

Range Rover Velar Rear

Being a large SUV, the Velar offers plenty of space. Both driver and front passenger will have no complaints with the head and legroom on offer, and six-footers should find the rear seating more than acceptable. The front seats are rather chunky though, which does dent rear legroom for taller adults. The middle seat is really only suitable for children, or an adult on a relatively short journey.

Boot space is decent with 632 litres available, which beats the 550 litres you get in an Audi Q5, and 500 litres in a BMW X4. It falls just short of its Jaguar F-PACE cousin, which offers 650 litres.

As for economy, the Velar returns between 37 and 44mpg when opting for a diesel, or circa 25mpg in the petrol versions, although with the V8, you will see closer to 20mpg. PHEV versions can return up to 130mpg, however.

Insurance groupings are between 31 and 46, whilst the range-topping SVAutobiography sits in the highest group 50 slot. Being a premium SUV, servicing costs mirror the enhanced engineering on offer. Due to this, we recommend specialist care in the form of Stratstone Land Rover.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Range Rover Velar Interior

Being part of the Range Rover family, step inside the Velar and you are greeted by fine luxury and striking interior design. Quality materials and eye-catching digital screens are the main focus; the highlight being the pair making up the centre console which contain the Velar's infotainment and settings.

SE models and above make use of a fully-digital instrument cluster, although models with analogue set-ups are still crisp and clear, if not as striking.

Entry-level models still get the touchscreens, as well as keyless entry, cruise control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. S models get an additional 360-degree surround camera, whilst HSE models showcase 'Windsor' leather and an enhanced Meridian Stereo.

There is no need to worry about safety either, as the Velar was awarded a full five-star Euro NCAP crash test score, thanks to features including:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Blind spot assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Traction control

Is the Range Rover Velar right for me?

If you are in the market for a luxury SUV that is perhaps one of the best looking out there, then you can't ignore the Velar. Especially when it won 'World Car Design of the Year' at the 2018 World Car Awards.

It's an SUV built more for comfort and style, rather than outright dynamics, so the previously mentioned BMW X4 or Jaguar F-PACE will offer much more driving involvement and enjoyment. The Velar hits back by staying true to its Land Rover heritage and being much more of a success when the terrain gets trickier.
