Range Rover Evoque Front

First appearing in 2011, the Evoque is the entry-level Range Rover within the Land Rover range. Here we are taking a look at the second generation model, which was unveiled in 2018.

Finely-tuned exterior enhancements ensure this second generation Evoque does not stray too far from the popular original, but complement the vehicle's overall more polished presentation. An up-to-date interior full of state-of-the-art technology ensures the Evoque is one of the most luxurious premium SUVs you can buy.

Headline highlights include:

  • Refined looks and style
  • Excellent off-road ability
  • An entry-level point into Range Rover ownership

Engines and Driving Experience

Range Rover Evoque Rear

Engine choice in the Range Rover Evoque is as follows:

  • 2.0-litre diesel with 163bhp or 201bhp, badged D165 and D200 respectively
  • 2.0-litre petrol with 197bhp, 247bhp or 296bhp, badged P200, P250 and P300 respectively.
  • 1.5-litre petrol plug-in hybrid with 304bhp, badged P300e

The diesels are impressively smooth, and are whisper quiet. This is thanks to mild hybrid technology which helps calm the engine in the higher rev ranges. Petrol versions offer more performance with the P300 accelerating from 0 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds, which is a full 3.0 seconds faster than the entry-level D165. This isn't the fastest Evoque though, that is reserved for the P300e plug-in hybrid, which takes 6.1 seconds.

In typical Range Rover fashion, Land Rover have ensured the Evoque is all about refinement and comfort, mimicking its larger and more expensive Range Rover siblings.

Practicality and Running Costs

Range Rover Evoque Boot

Being the most compact offering from Land Rover, the Range Rover Evoque still offers a decent level of enhanced SUV practicality. You can sit four large adults comfortably, although like many cars, the middle rear seat is only really suitable for children, or perhaps an adult on a shorter journey.

Due to the vehicle's sleek roofline, rear space is not class-leading, but children will have acres of space which is predominately the kind of passengers who will sit back there. On the plus side, you do get a rather large 591 litres of boot space.

As for running costs, diesel engines will average a fraction over 40mpg, whilst petrol engines will return around 30mpg. The P300e can deliver an impressive 143mpg, whilst being able to offer up to 34 miles of pure electric driving.

Insurance groupings range from 25 to 40 (50 is the highest) and owners should set aside extra for servicing, as being a luxury SUV, maintenance isn't as affordable as your average family SUV. Evans Halshaw dealers are able to service Evoque models, but for specialist care, we'd recommend Stratstone Land Rover.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Range Rover Evoque Interior

Land Rover have enhanced the Evoque's luxury even further in this second generation model. There is extra sound deadening for starters, which allows for a much more refined drive than that of the first generation.

Two striking touchscreens make up the centre console, which are the same used in the Range Rover Velar and ensure the cabin has the extra wow factor. There is also a rather smart and striking digital instrument cluster, rain-sensing wipers, a rear-view camera and heated seats, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto completing the toys on offer.

This second generation Evoque also received a full five-star Euro NCAP crash test score, thanks to the following features:

  • Emergency braking
  • Traffic-sign recognition
  • Blind-spot assist
  • Driver alert system
  • Adaptive cruise control

Is the Range Rover Evoque right for me?

The Evoque is a great first entry into Range Rover ownership. It offers a great level of luxury in a more compact package.

However, due to the current huge popularity in SUVs, it does face stiff competition in the form of the Porsche Macan and BMW X2.

The Porsche features a more dynamic drive, as does the BMW, but if comfort and relaxation are your thing, then the Evoque ticks all the right boxes. It's also better off-road, too.
