Jaguar XE Front Side

The Jaguar XE is a 4-door compact executive car that was first introduced in 2015. In a fierce marketplace, the XE certainly had its work cut out. But with sharp Jaguar styling, a multitude of engine choices and typical Jaguar luxury and comfort, it made a sound case for itself, especially if you didn't want a stereotypical German compact executive car.

Updated in 2019, and coming with simplified engine choices in 2021, first impressions ensure the Jaguar XE offers:

  • Smart Jaguar styling
  • A dynamic driving experience
  • A fresh alternative in a crowded marketplace
  • Decent economy
  • Impressive comfort and tech

Engines and Driving Experience

Jaguar XE Rear Side

In the compact executive class, it's hard to get noticed if you are not a German brand these days. With the Jaguar XE being of an outside of the box choice, to drive at least, the Jaguar XE is arguably the most enjoyable.

Engine choice has changed over the years, but usually you'll find a 2.0-litre unit in the XE with varying levels of power, being fuelled by either petrol or diesel. Stand out engines in the range include:

  • 2.0-litre 177bhp diesel (D180) 0 to 62mph in 6.9 seconds
  • 2.0-litre 245bhp petrol (P250) 0 to 62mph in 6.2 seconds
  • 2.0-litre 295bhp petrol (P300) 0 to 62mph in 5.7 seconds

Other older petrol and diesel engines are available, but the three above represent the most popular points in the range.

Practicality and Running Costs

Jaguar XE Boot

With four doors, the Jaguar XE is a decent executive car, which can take on family duties when needed. Space in the back of the car will prove tight for adults, but for children it's fine.

The tightness is due to the car's sleek roofline, but like many cars, enhanced style usually means you lose a little practicality, so the XE will still appeal for sure. Driver space is rather fitted too, perhaps why the XE feels very good to drive, giving a somewhat cocooned nature.

At 291 litres, the boot is smaller by almost 100 litres than that of the popular BMW 3 Series, but again will come down to taste and preference.

Economy in the Jaguar XE is more than reasonable with 36mpg possible in the petrol versions and 57mpg in the diesels.

Insurance and tax are competitive, and servicing is straightforward and can be done at any Evans Halshaw, or Stratstone Jaguar dealer for more specialist care.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Jaguar XE Interior

The driver-focused feel of the XE will certainly impress those who want more than just a plain compact executive car. The wraparound feel of the cabin feels good and with Jaguar quality, the XE is a nice place to spend time, with premium material choice and clear dials and instruments at the heart of the experience.

Low level trims feature classic and crisp analogue dials, but move up a spec or two and you'll take advantage of digital dials and better infotainment options.

As for safety, the Jaguar XE achieved a full five-stars when it was tested by Euro NCAP. This is thanks to features in the range including:

  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Blind spot warning
  • Forward Traffic Detection
  • Rear parking sensors

Is the Jaguar XE right for me?

The executive compact car sector has been a tough market for decades, and as mentioned previous, is dominated by German marques.

But the Jaguar XE proves it can take on the front runners, and beat them at their own game in some aspects. The XE is arguably the best to drive, if you're a fan of dynamics, feel and handling. Later cars also have impressive tech and digital flair.

The BMW 3 Series is still a textbook overall colossus providing more practicality, whereas the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is another hard to ignore German piece of textbook compact executive car building. The Audi A4 shouldn't be overlooked either, with its beautiful interior and virtual cockpit.
