The UK's tyre safety charity will be offering extensive support to roadside police this winter.

TyreSafe has announced that it will be helping UK police conduct roadside tyre checks to ensure the safety of all road users. The campaign will initially involve a substantial handout of 2,000 digital tread depth gauges to the roadside police force to be used by traffic officers all over the country.

Legally, all tyres must have at least 1.6mm depth of tread. Drivers who have tyres with tread of a depth below the legal requirement face a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre.

Driving with bald tyres in rain can result in difficulty stopping with potential to lose complete control of a vehicle with high risk of causing a serious road traffic accident (RTA).

This is the first year that tyres are to be included on the list of suggested visual vehicle checks carried out by police. The partnership between TyreSafe and UK police has been introduced with the aim to raise awareness of the risks of dangerous tyres in the winter and to prevent major incidents that can easily be avoided.

In addition to driving with bald tyres, cars being driven with underinflated tyres also pose a risk to UK road users and is another issue that TyreSafe will be highlighting during the campaign.

Driving with the correct tyre pressure does not only eliminate the risk of incidents on the road by improving the control a driver has of the vehicle, but also saves on fuel consumption.

TyreSafe are carrying out the campaign in the hope of educating motorists of the hazards and risks of driving with unsafe tyres and are hopeful that drivers will take this advice on board.

As a member of TyreSafe, all Evans Halshaw dealerships offer free tyre checks and encourage motorists to visit their local dealership for a complimentary Vehicle Health Check.
