Let's get this out the way early on to avoid confusion, this is not a SEAT Ateca Cupra - and that's because Cupra is now a separate sub-brand that focuses on performance orientated machines. So yes, this car is based on the popular SEAT Ateca for the most part, but it's actually a Cupra.

So, what do we have here? Well, Cupra have taken the standard and very popular SEAT Ateca and decided that it would be much better if it had nearly 300bhp and 300lbs/ft torque being distributed through all four wheels - that's quite an astonishing concept for a family SUV.

Cupra have been clever with the Ateca, they have managed to add a blend of uniqueness and sophistication without the end result being vulgar - top marks there. The front and rear bumpers have been beefed up, while a subtle boot spoiler sits at the top of the tailgate.

Less subtle features are the four polished exhaust tips that feature prominently within the rear diffuser. Big Brembo brakes are available and sit purposefully behind the 19-inch diamond cut alloy wheels (available in several extravagant colours). There's also an array of carbon fibre trims to choose from alongside some striking body colours. Make no mistake then, the Cupra Ateca is certainly a handsome thing indeed.

The standard Atecas interior is certainly nothing to be sniffed at - it's well bolted together and features quality materials - Cupra have built on these foundations by adding more technology and style. Keyless entry and start feature alongside an 8-inch touchscreen navigation system, while park assist and a wireless phone charging pad are guaranteed to be a firm favourite on a daily basis. Inside you will also find a blend of copper details and high quality alcantara coverings, all combining to create a premium feeling that this car deserves.

A noticeable feature sits right in front of the driver, the 10.2" LCS screen offers crystal clear detail over standard dials - it also benefits from displaying performance information. The Cupra Ateca is a car that places emphasis on driving pleasure, there is six different driving modes to accommodate the driver's mood - including a Cupra mode that sharpens the suspension and throttle response.

Cameras are built into the front, rear and exterior mirrors for an advanced 360° view of the car when manoeuvring. Park Assist comes as standard; 12 sensors are dotted around the body of the Ateca and help to steer the car into tight parking spots on the first attempt. On top of this, the Ateca has a 5-star Euro NCAP rating for your peace of mind.

CUPRA Ateca International October 2018 (10) - Technology

As mentioned in the introduction, the Cupra Ateca produces 296bhp and 296lbs/ft torque - which is also known as a lot. The power is courtesy of a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit that is also found in the Volkswagen Golf R, which is certainly no slouch. Because the power is distributed to all four wheels, the Cupra Ateca - a family SUV let's not forget - can launch to 62mph in just 5.2 seconds!

The most interesting part isn't actually the amount of power generated, it's the way that power and torque is delivered to the wheels. The nigh-on 300lbs/ft torque comes into full force at just 2000rpm thanks to the turbocharger, meaning you have immense pulling power from the bottom of the rev-range right up to the red line - genuinely intoxicating. All this power is put through a very refined 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox that provides instant gearchanges during an enthusiastic drive, while having the ability to settle down and offer excellent fuel economy when cruising.
