Since it's market launch over a year ago, the Hyundai i30 N five-door has been a huge commercial success. Now, the mad scientists in the 'Namyang' (What the 'N' stands for) division have brought us the i30 Fastback N, an everyday sports car that also happens to be extremely capable on track.

Exterior

The new car features a strong stance to characterise its performance focused appearance. The distinctive 'N' looking body kit isn't just for show, it manipulates the air as it flows over the body of the car to provide more downforce in the corners and less drag on the straights.

Air curtains that feature at the front of the car allow cool air to pass over the Monoblock calipers, helping to prevent brake fade during a spirited drive. The arched spoiler is integrated into the tailgate and follows the aggressive lines of the tear-drop shaped cabin. A choice of lightweight 18-inch or 19-inch alloy wheels complement the dynamic proportions of the car. To complete the package is a variable exhaust system that exits the rear of the car via twin dual mufflers.

Interior

Despite being a performance orientated car, the Fastback N doesn't lose any practicality inside - boasting a generous amount of head and leg room alongside a large boot. However, there is a host of performance features that add to the experience of the Fastback N. The exclusive 'N' sports steering wheel puts the driver at the centre of the action and ensures all the driving mode adjustments are at the fingertips.

The interior design is simple yet sophisticated, the screen that sits central keeps the dash clean and uncluttered, while every button is clear and easy to find so that more time can be spent concentrating on driving. The sports seats hug the driver in all the right places and come finished in cloth as standard, there is a combination of suede and leather available too.

Technology

Unsurprisingly, the Fastback N comes with a host of technology that is designed to help you devour corners and leave a massive grin on your face. That's why this car comes with 'N Grin Control System' (that's genuinely the name), which allows the driver to choose from five drive modes - Eco, Normal, Sport, N and N Custom - the idea is the driver can tailor the car to their mood and style.

The driver will also be able to make use of a rev-matching function, which blips the throttle on the downshift to ensure the car's balance isn't upset before a corner. Four variable dampers help to keep the Fastback N planted, but also make for a supple ride when the car is in 'Eco' mode.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard on the i30 N alongside an eight-inch capacitive LCD touchscreen, which delivers seamless phone connectivity. A wireless inductive charging pad is included as standard to ensure the occupants' phone is always fully charged.

Engine

The Fastback N is fitted with two variants of Hyundai's petrol 2-litre turbocharged unit, producing 250bhp and 275bhp respectively. Both engines also generate over 250 ft/lbs torque from the bottom of the rev-range right up to the redline. The power is delivered to the front wheels through a trick differential, which launches the Fastback N to 62mph in a shade over six seconds. To ensure the potent engine note is made the most of, Hyundai have very kindly fitted the i30 Fastback N with variable exhaust system, which guarantees to put the emotion back into driving.
