Big news from Vauxhall, with the announcement of their first ever plug-in hybrid: the new Grandland X all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid. Set to go on sale in late 2019, this hybrid version of the powerful SUV marks the first step in Vauxhall’s plans to go electric. Let’s take a look at what we can expect from it.

Greener yet more powerful

The new Grandland X’s powertrain, known as the Hybrid4, is set to offer impressive emissions figures and a strong fuel consumption rate, with only 49g/km of CO2 and up to 128mpg. Great environmental credentials then, but by no means is this just a car for greener motorists.

This will be the most powerful Grandland X yet, with a 1.6-litre petrol engine delivering 200bhp and two electric motors with a combined output of 109bhp, for a total output of 296bhp – seriously quick, in other words. Plenty of driving fun to be had then, and at less cost to the environment.

Intelligent Electric Drive system

The Grandland X Hybrid4 will provide you with plenty of control in terms of how much the battery power is used. You will be able to choose from four different modes (electric, hybrid, AWD and Sport) depending on whether you want to conserve battery power or save fuel. The Hybrid4 enables you to drive for up to 30 miles on electric power alone, meaning short journeys can be undertaken completely emission-free and stop-start city driving is made easier.

The new Grandland X will also feature regenerative braking, whereby energy normally lost by braking is sent back to the battery, meaning the electric range can increase by up to 10%. Recharging the 13.2 kwH battery doesn’t take forever either, with wall-mounted home charging points doing the job in less than two hours.

Built to go anywhere

With all-wheel drive, the new Grandland X Hybrid4 will provide the grip and control for both urban and rural adventures, while the 8-speed automatic transmission will enhance the smooth yet powerful performance.

These additions will compliment the Grandland X’s already strong features, such as its muscular appearance, practical boot and generous equipment list. The new Grandland X will add more in this regard, with a key feature being Vauxhall’s Connect service, which provides real-time traffic updates and lets you check on the status of your car using an app.

The Grandland X Hybrid4 will be just the start of Vauxhall's plans to go electric. The manufacturer is set to release fully electric vehicles in the not-too-distant future, with electric versions of the Corsa, Mokka X, Vivaro Life and Vivaro van all in the pipeline. Vauxhall is ready to embrace the electric vehicle revolution.
