The IONIQ is somewhat unique in the world of new cars, as it's available in three different electrified forms: hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all electric. They all have the same basic shape and offer the same levels of practicality, so it really depends how far you wish to dip your toe into the world of electric vehicles. Discover the differences below.

IONIQ Hybrid

IONIQ hybrid offers all the benefits of a conventional car, as well as many of the environmental benefits that come with driving an electrified vehicle.

An ultra-efficient 1.6-litre petrol engine combines with an electric motor to deliver the most fuel-efficient way of travelling from A to B, without the need to ever plug it in. It's classed as a self-charging hybrid, using regenerative braking as well as the petrol engine to keep the batteries topped up.

On the road, it drives like a normal petrol-engined car would do - you just fuel it up and off you go. It only uses the combustion engine when it needs to, cutting in and out automatically to make full use of the fuel-saving electric motor.

IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid

The plug-in variant of the IONIQ is very similar in terms of its driving experience to the full hybrid, but you have the option of charging it up (which takes just 2 hours and 15 minutes) then driving for up to 39 miles using electric power only.

When the EV power runs out, it switches back to being a normal hybrid for a further 600+ miles of range, providing the fuel tank is brimmed with petrol.

This is a great option for commuters, many of whom will be able to get to work and back on EV power alone. You then have the flexibility to travel further afield using the hybrid power at the weekend - the plug-in offers the best of both worlds.

IONIQ Electric

Ready to jump with both feet into electric driving? The IONIQ Electric is ready for every journey, with a range of up to 194 miles. This is thanks to the large-capacity lithium-ion polymer battery, for increased performance and driving range.

Hyundai say it's the electric vehicle that can "charge faster than a smartphone" - it's able to charge up to 80% capacity in as little as 57 minutes, which is impressive.

You'll be equally impressed with the driving experience too, the instantaneous throttle responsive and surprising acceleration makes electric cars uniquely enjoyable to drive. Clever features such as the sat-nav which shows the available driving distance as a radius around your current location make life that little bit easier, too.

Three compelling ways to go - the IONIQ really does have all of the electrified bases covered.

If you're just starting out and want to try out the electric lifestyle, a hybrid IONIQ may be just what you're looking for. The flexibility of the plug-in hybrid means you can commute emission-free but then go further afield when you need to, and the all-electric offers sufficient range to be suitable as an only car.
