Volkswagen Beetle rear

The Volkswagen Beetle is an affordable hatchback that has retro-styling with modern safety features and driver aids.

If you're in the market for a stylish car that takes design cues from classic models, then you're pretty limited for choice. Besides the Beetle, the only other two affordable cars that fit that remit are the MINI Hatchback and Fiat 500, but neither of them are as practical.

In a nutshell, here's why a Volkswagen Beetle makes a good used car purchase:

  • Retro appearance
  • Volkswagen build quality
  • Efficient choice of engines
  • Refined driving experience

Engines and Driving Experience

Volkswagen Beetle driving

The Beetle is based on the same platform as the Volkswagen Golf, which translates to a comfortable ride and sharp steering. You might be disappointed if it's outright driving thrills you're after - you'll want a MINI Hatchback for that - but it still offers plenty of entertainment thanks to its punchy engines.

  • 1.4-litre: 148bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.9 seconds, up to 47.9mpg
  • 2.0-litre: 217bhp, 0 to 62mph in 6.7 seconds, up to 43.5mpg

Practicality and Running Costs

Volkswagen Beetle boot

Because of the sloping roofline and 3-door format implemented by Volkswagen, the Beetle isn't the epitome of practicality. However, it beats the likes of the Fiat 500, which are noticeably smaller by comparison.

Despite this, the Beetle can still comfortably accommodate children in the back. Once you've navigated the front seats, you'll be able to easily fit a child's seat thanks to the presence of ISOFIX anchor points. With 310 litres of space on offer, the Beetle's boot is much bigger than what you get in the MINI Hatchback (211 litres) and Fiat 500 (185 litres).

The Beetle typically occupies insurance groups between 10 and 26 (out of 50), so your annual premium should be affordable unless you're opting for the faster models. Evans Halshaw retailers are well equipped to carry out any servicing or maintenance needs.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Volkswagen Beetle interior

Typical of a Volkswagen, the Beetle has a tastefully designed interior that features a host of quality materials throughout. It's great to see that features from the original Beetle, such as the vertical glovebox lid, have been included by Volkswagen.

Each Beetle comes with a central touchscreen as standard. It's not the most sophisticated compared to more modern alternatives, but it's still quick to respond to inputs and comes with features such as Bluetooth connectivity.

As you'd expect from a modern car, equipment such as air conditioning and remote central locking are included as standard. R-Line models are popular because of their sporty enhancements, while Dune variants offer chunkier tyres and protective cladding.

The Beetle achieved the full five-star rating during the Euro NCAP safety tests, thanks to excellent occupant protection and the following features:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Tyre pressure warning system
  • Hill hold assist
  • Anti-lock brakes (ABS)

Is the Volkswagen Beetle right for me?

The Volkswagen Beetle isn't in production anymore, but that shouldn't put you off one if you're looking for a retro-looking hatchback that offers affordable running costs. And thanks to the Golf underpinnings, you can be confident you're investing in a quality vehicle.

Like we mentioned at the beginning, you don't have much choice if you want a modern car with vintage design cues. The MINI Hatchback and Fiat 500 are the obvious alternatives, but naturally it boils down to how much you need the additional practicality offered by the Beetle.
