The Vauxhall Zafira is a spacious multi-purpose vehicle (MPV for short) that has been a consistently popular choice with families of all sizes for quite some time. Beyond simply offering plenty of seats for the whole family and the dog, the Zafira was recognised for being affordable as an overall package, without costing a premium.
Vauxhall don't actually make the Zafira anymore, but with the last generation having been in production between 2013 and 2018, there are still plenty of great examples to choose from on the used car market. Here's a general overview of what to expect:

With a shade over 44mpg achievable on a combined cycle, it's a good option for town drivers wanting to keep fuel costs down.
Diesel options will be more common in the Zafira, with a 1.6-litre CDTi ecoTEC and 2.0-litre CDTi producing 132 and 168bhp respectively. Expect around 57mpg from the larger engine, while the smaller unit returns up to an impressive 62.8mpg. An automatic gearbox is available for all but the smallest diesel engine.
Practicality and Running Costs
The Zafira boasts a ton of space throughout the cabin, with acres of head and leg room for passengers sat in the back. The third row is a little tighter for space compared to the second row, but children will be able to get comfortable with ease. More space can be created by sliding the middle-row of seats back and forth independently.
Now, there's only 152 litres of luggage capacity with all seven seats in situ, but this does grow to a very healthy 710 litres with the third row of seats folded completely flat. There's no loading lip, so it's easy to load and remove pushchairs.
The majority of Zafira models occupy insurance groups between 15 and 22, so annual premiums shouldn't be too offensive. Tyres will be inexpensive enough, but be ready to pay a premium on models with larger diameter alloy wheels. Interior, Technology and Safety
This generation of Zafira features a clever interior design that feels more premium than the price tag would suggest. Soft-touch materials can be found on all the surfaces that matter, while the driving position offers plenty of adjustability.
Generously equipped across the range, all models get a 7-inch touchscreen alongside air-conditioning, which are operated by easy-to-use buttons and dials. Parking sensors all-round come as standard, which is useful in a car this size, although visibility is hardly poor without them.
Higher specification models get luxuries such as dual-zone climate control, satellite navigation and heated leather seats. Look for the SRi if you want something sportier because it comes with 18-inch wheels and a number of distinctive exterior changes.
