The Vauxhall Insignia is an executive car that has been designed to offer a more affordable alternative to the traditional German options, but without compromising on refinement and technology.

Having only entered its second generation in 2017, you'd be forgiven for thinking the Insignia Grand Sport has a lot of catching up to do on more established rivals. However, that couldn't be further from the truth, because this generation of Insignia offers a ton of desirable features, as well as a solid driving experience.

Why you should consider an Insignia at a glance:

  • Good looking executive car
  • Efficient range of engines
  • Generous specifications
  • Refined driving experience
  • Better value than most rivals

Engines and Driving Experience

Refinement improved noticeably over the outgoing model, which tied in nicely with the increase in cabin quality. As a result, the Insignia glides down the road effortlessly, with minimal road noise intruding on the cockpit. The Insignia offers a solid driving experience, but you may want to consider a BMW 3 Series if driver involvement is high on your list of priorities.

Starting off the range of petrol engines is a 1.5-litre with either 138 or 168bhp, which will return around 47mpg on a mixed cycle. Punchier engines include a 1.6-litre with 197bhp and a four-wheel drive 2.0-litre with 256bhp. It's worth noting that the latter sports an exclusive 8-speed automatic gearbox.

There are four diesel options available, which comprise a 1.6-litre with 108 or 134bhp, and a larger 2.0-litre unit that is available with either 168 or 207bhp. Expect up to 65mpg out of the smaller unit, and over 50mpg from the larger engine.

Practicality and Running Costs

Vauxhall improved the amount of interior space available inside the Insignia, with more leg and head room gifted to passengers in the rear. Storage compartments and useful cubby holes are in good supply, giving the driver and passengers plenty of places to keep their smart devices and water bottles.

The boot is fairly capacious, with 490 litres of space on offer. Owners certainly won't struggle to load or store a large pushchair. And thanks to the 60:40 split rear bench, the boot space can increase up to 1,540 litres. If you need a bigger boot, then consider the Ford Mondeo (550 litres) or the Skoda Superb (610 litres).

Being a Vauxhall, running costs are very reasonable. For example, the Insignia is over 10 insurance groups lower than German rivals, which will reflect in lower annual premiums. Servicing and maintenance is also lower than rivals, with discounts available at any of our Evans Halshaw Vauxhall retailers when you're signed up to Vauxhall Service Club.

Interior, Technology and Safety

As expected from Vauxhall, the Insignia Grand Sport is well-equipped throughout the range. All models come with a vibrant 7-inch touchscreen as standard, unless you opt for a model with satellite navigation, in which case you get an 8-inch screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features as standard for seamless smartphone mirroring.

Air-conditioning, keyless entry, and cruise control feature on all models. Luxuries, such as dual-zone climate control, rain-sensitive wipers, and a 4.2-inch digital dashboard display, are unlocked further up the range. If you're after something sportier, then consider the SRi or SRi VX-Line Nav models, which offer bigger wheels, tinted windows, and other bits of distinctive exterior trim.

Available safety features include:

  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Lane departure warning system
  • Forward collision alert
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Intellilux LED® Matrix headlights

Is the Vauxhall Insignia right for me?

There was a time when you would be restricted to the likes of the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class if you wanted a refined executive car that had plenty of toys. The Insignia then came along and changed that by offering a lot of the same features without the premium to match it. All-in-all, if you want an accomplished car that ticks the right boxes, then the Insignia won't disappoint.

If you want to check out similar vehicles, then the Ford Mondeo offers a lot of the same qualities without costing an arm and a leg, while the BMW 3 Series offers a bit more driver involvement.
