Engines and Driving Experience

This generation of RAV4 can only be found with a hybrid powertrain, one of which is a full petrol/electric hybrid, the other is a plug-in hybrid. Key stats:

2.5-litre petrol/electric hybrid: all-wheel drive, 219bhp, 48.7mpg
2.5-litre petrol plug-in hybrid: all-wheel drive, 302bhp, 46-mile electric-only range, 282mpg

Front-wheel drive RAV4s are the cheapest to buy and run, all-wheel drive versions give you that extra bit of traction while plug-in hybrid variants - which are reasonably expensive to buy - offer superb performance and efficiency. All RAV4s of this generation are equipped with automatic gearboxes as standard; there's no manual option.

Towing enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the all-wheel drive variant has a braked towing capacity of 1,650kg, whereas front-wheel drive models can only manage 800kg. Plug-in versions can tow up to 1,500kg.

Practicality and Running Costs

The RAV4 has always been a car that has worked hard to accommodate the needs of families, with a huge 580-litre boot that's larger in capacity than the Ford Kuga (526 litres) or Vauxhall Grandland X (514 litres).

Interior room is also a strong suit; the car's boxy exterior styling contributes to plentiful head and legroom. Useful features on the inside include two rear ISOFIX child seat anchors, door bins that will hold water bottles and rear USB charging points.

The hybrid powertrain means running costs are kept low, with around 45 to 50mpg possible on both front-wheel and all-wheel drive models. Superior acceleration to rivals means insurance groups between 25 to 34 will result in slightly above average premiums, certainly higher than cars such as the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson.

Interior, Technology and Safety

This version of the RAV4 really stepped up its game in terms of interior quality, with premium-feeling materials scattered around the cabin, most notably on the door panels, steering wheel and centre console. It feels very well put together and the controls are well laid out.

All of the technology you would expect is included, such as sat nav, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera. Compared to the Volkswagen Tiguan, the central touchscreen is fine but not exactly class-leading in terms of functionality and speed.
