Used Toyota Prius Exterior

The Toyota Prius is a hybrid hatchback that's known throughout the world as being the pioneer of petrol/electric hybrid technology. First introduced in 2015, the latest generation builds on the Prius' reputation for exceptional fuel efficiency and ease of drive.

It sits in the range of Toyota used cars between the Corolla and Camry Hybrid, but has unique styling to set it apart from other models on the road as well as optimise aerodynamics. Reasons to buy a used Toyota Prius include:

  • Tremendous fuel economy
  • Proven, dependable hybrid powertrain
  • Smooth automatic gearbox
  • Lots of standard equipment
  • Spacious interior with a large boot

Engines and Driving Experience

Used Toyota Prius Plug-in Charging

There are two types of Prius powertrain to choose from:

  • 1.8-litre petrol/electric hybrid: 120bhp, up to 67mpg
  • 1.8-litre petrol/electric plug-in hybrid: 120bhp, up to 39 miles electric range, 65mpg thereafter

Of the two, the standard hybrid is by far the most popular Prius, largely because it's self-charging and never needs to be plugged in. Its pure-electric range is minimal, but it cuts down fuel usage around town significantly.

A used Prius Plug-in hybrid (pictured) makes sense for those who can complete their daily commute within the 39 miles of electric vehicle range, which will see them use no fuel at all until they need to travel further afield.

The driving experience of the Prius can be described as calm and smooth. The ride is comfortable, especially at lower speeds, and quick steering makes it easy to manoeuvre in traffic.

Practicality and Running Costs

Used Toyota Prius Boot Space

The Prius can be described as decently practical, particularly for a 2+2 family. The front is very spacious while rear head and legroom are great for kids and reasonable for adults.

Boot capacity is good too, thanks to the lift-back design, with 457 litres of boot space more than a match for the similarly-profiled Hyundai IONIQ (443 litres) and family hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Golf (381 litres). The rear seats fold flat, making it simple to load long items into the 1,633 litres of space that's revealed by doing so.

Running costs are where the Prius excels, because fuel economy well into the 60mpg range can be achieved through careful driving.

Servicing costs are no more expensive than normal vehicles, and still require scheduled oil and filter changes, which can be carried out at Evans Halshaw dealerships. In fact, the hybrid technology actually reduces overall maintenance costs because brake discs and pads require changing less often than in non-hybrid cars.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Used Toyota Prius Interior

Hop in a Toyota Prius of any generation and you'll instantly feel as though you're in something futuristic. The digital gauges - mounted centrally and high up on the dashboard - give you all the information you need, with some models even featuring a head-up display for easier viewing.

The "Toyota Touch" infotainment system houses all of your media, smartphone connectivity and navigation settings, as well as a rear-view camera that comes in handy when parking. Active models are the base level specification, while Business Edition+ and Excel models give you a lot more gadgets to play with, like wireless phone charging and intelligent park assist.

Safety is rated at five stars by Euro NCAP, the highest possible score. Standard safety features on all Prius models include:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Road sign assist
  • Pre-collision warning system with pedestrian detection
  • Automatic high beam
  • ISOFIX child seat anchor points

Is the Toyota Prius right for me?

For many used car buyers, fuel economy and running costs are a priority and those are the people who will be wooed by the Prius. But don't think that the Prius doesn't have any other tricks up its sleeve, because it also provides excellent family transport thanks to roomy back seats, a big boot and plenty of gadgets and tech up front.

Rivals come in many shapes and sizes, from hybrid cars like the Hyundai IONIQ and Ford Mondeo Hybrid to family hatchbacks such as the SEAT Leon and Vauxhall Astra.

Small saloon cars like the Audi A3 and BMW 3 Series should also be on your list if you're looking for something comfortable, spacious and economical.
