The Toyota Corolla is a family hatchback that's famous for providing hassle-free and comfortable transport for the masses. It's also available in saloon and Touring Sports (estate) guise.
The Corolla sits in the used Toyota range above the Yaris hatchback and below the C-HR crossover having replaced the Auris in 2019. Reasons to buy a used Corolla include:

Engines and Driving Experience
Used Toyota Corollas come with either turbo petrol or self-charging hybrid powertrains. When browsing the used market, you'll come across three different engine options:
- 1.2-litre turbo petrol: 114bhp, 45mpg, 0 to 62mph in 9.8 seconds
- 1.8-litre petrol/electric hybrid: 120bhp, up to 63mpg (16" wheels), 0 to 62mph in 10.5 seconds
- 2.0-litre petrol/electric hybrid: 181bhp, 53.3mpg, 0 to 62mph in 7.6 seconds
The 1.2-litre turbo petrol provides adequate performance and is the only Corolla you can buy with a manual gearbox.
For maximum fuel economy, you'll want the 1.8-litre hybrid, while the top-spec 2.0-litre provides a good deal more performance without a big fuel economy penalty.
On the road the Corolla is very comfortable and refined, with the added bonus of a surprising amount of driver engagement being reported by expert road testers.
Practicality and Running Costs
Practicality is an important consideration for any family car, and the Corolla fares well in this area. 361 litres of boot space is similar to the Ford Focus (375 litres) and Vauxhall Astra (370 litres), although an additional battery in the 2.0-litre versions drops this figure to 313 litres.
The Corolla Saloon and Corolla Touring Sports estate have a longer wheelbase than the hatchback, meaning they offer increased boot capacity of 471 and 581 litres respectively.
Interior space is very good overall, with plenty of head and legroom in the back although the middle seat is only really suitable for children. ISOFIX child seat anchor points are present on the outer rear seats.
Running costs are really rather good, particularly on the hybrid models which are very fuel efficiency. Servicing prices are similar to other cars of this size, even on hybrid versions which can be looked after by Evans Halshaw dealerships.
Interior, Technology and Safety
Toyota have put together a really nice cabin for the Corolla, and buyers of used examples will enjoy the soft-touch materials and impressive standard equipment.
Popular Icon Tech models are kitted out with adaptive cruise control, satellite navigation, front/rear parking sensors and a reversing camera, plus heated seats and dual-zone climate control.
The only disappointment is the 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system, which is not as good as the one in the Kia Ceed and does not have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Safety is well covered however, the Corolla scoring the full five stars from Euro NCAP crash tests as a result of being equipped with:
- Lane departure warning
- Pre-collision system with auto braking
- Road sign recognition

The Corolla has a world-famous reputation for comfort, practicality and reliability. With the latest generation adding some more design flair and excitement into the mix, it really is an excellent family car.
Go for the 1.8-litre hybrid model if you're after something refined and economical, or the 2.0-litre if you want something a bit sportier.
There are some other very familiar names to consider if you're in the market for a family hatchback. The Volkswagen Golf is as good as ever, while the Hyundai i30 and Peugeot 308 remain excellent choices. The Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class are premium options to take a look at, too.
