The Suzuki Vitara is a small SUV that offers good levels of practicality, a comfortable ride and low running costs. It's also capable off-road if you plan on taking it there, thanks to the available 'Allgrip' four-wheel drive option.

Engines and Driving Experience

Like many other Suzuki models, the Vitara received a mid-life update which saw its range reduced to one - a 1.4-litre Boosterjet mild hybrid powertrain that produces 127bhp and is capable of going from 0 to 62mph in 9.5 seconds. As you can probably work out, it's not the most dynamic to drive but it is economical when it comes to fuel consumption, achieving around 53mpg WLTP.

If you're not convinced by hybrid power and want something more traditional, you'll be able to find petrol and diesel engines on older models. The most common include:

1.0-litre petrol: 109bhp, 0 to 62mph in 12.5 seconds and circa 42mpg.
1.4-litre petrol: 138bhp, 0 to 62mpg in 10.2 seconds and circa 37mpg.
1.6-litre petrol: 118bhp, 0 to 62mph in 13 seconds and circa 50mpg.
1.6-litre diesel: 118bhp, 0 to 62mph in 12.4 seconds and circa 63mpg.

Both manual and automatic transmissions can be found across the range.

Practicality and Running Costs

Overall, interior space is good, with the Vitara providing more than enough room in the front for occupants of all heights. In the rear it's a similar story; four adults will be able to ride in comfort. However, it may be a bit of a squeeze when fully loaded with adults. Models with the panoramic roof also sacrifice a bit of head room in the rear.

Fitting a child seat to the ISOFIX mounting points in the rear is made easier thanks to the reasonable amount of space. The boot is also well-sized, offering 375 litres as standard and 710 litres when folding the 60/40 split-folding rear seats flat.

Running costs won't break the bank either, with insurance ranging between groups 12 and 23 (out of 50) dependent upon specification. Low cost servicing and maintenance can also be carried out at your local Evans Halshaw dealership.

Interior, Technology and Safety

The interior isn't as eye-catching as what rivals have to offer, but its simplistic styling is easy to get to grips with. It does feel durable and there are a few nice touches dotted around the cabin, but you're better off looking elsewhere if you want a more premium feel.

In terms of equipment, even entry-level 'SZ4' models come fairly well-equipped with adaptive cruise control, 16-inch alloys and LED headlights as standard. Going for the higher specifications such as the 'SZ5' unlocks features such as Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, larger 17-inch alloys and keyless entry.

When Euro NCAP put the Vitara through its rigorous crash tests, it came out the other side with the full five-star safety rating thanks to a range of available safety gear, such as:
