Porsche Macan S

Introduced in 2014, the Macan was the second SUV to be offered by iconic sports car manufacturer Porsche.

It was a more compact SUV offering, again targeting a new kind of buyer and slotted in nicely with the existing, larger Cayenne SUV.

Subtle updates occurred in 2018 and 2021, ensuring the car remained competitive and fresh. As a used car, the Macan is an attractive package, with many of its strengths highlighted below.

  • Fantastic to drive
  • Incredibly refined
  • Practical
  • Multiple versions/engines
  • Handsome styling
  • Porsche heritage and badge

Engines and Driving Experience

Porsche Macan S

Diesel engines in the Macan were phased out in 2018. They do offer reasonable pace and good economy with circa 40mpg possible. The real performers are the petrol engines, which really add into the whole Porsche sports car feeling and include:

  • Macan: 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol, 261bhp, 0 to 62mph in 6.4 seconds or 6.2 with Sport Chrono Package, up to 28mpg
  • Macan S: 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6, 375bhp, 0 to 62mph in 4.8 seconds or 4.6 seconds with Sport Chrono Package, up to 25mpg
  • Macan GTS: 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6, 434bhp, 0 to 62mph in 4.5 seconds or 4.3 seconds with Sport Chrono Package, up to 25mpg

The base Macan is great to drive and is more than quick enough. The S and GTS really spice things up and give more of that Porsche DNA, especially with the optional Sport Chrono Package which ensures off-the-line acceleration is even more of an event.

PDK (auto) transmissions are standard in the range, whilst air suspension comes on the GTS models, enhancing comfort and sharpness. However, each Macan is a Porsche after all, and so those wanting a dynamic driver-focused SUV won't be disappointed.

Practicality and Running Costs

Porsche Macan GTS

For a compact SUV, the Macan still offers plenty of space within the cabin. Head and legroom should be plentiful for most, while the car's enhanced height ensures drivers will have a superb view of the road ahead.

As for boot space, with 488 litres on offer the Macan is outgunned by the likes of the BMW X3 (550 litres),Range Rover Evoque (591 litres) and Mercedes-Benz GLC (550 litres). You will still be able to fit quite a lot in the boot of a Macan, but you just get that bit extra in its rivals.

As for running costs, with circa 20-25mpg the Macan is thirstier than its competition and being a Porsche, maintenance is going to reflect that come service time. The sharpness, dynamics and overall package does warrant the increased cost however. For a specialist performance SUV like this, we would always recommend Stratstone Porsche.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Porsche Macan GTS Interior

Climb inside any Porsche Macan and you're not going to be disappointed. This is a driver-focused SUV full of luxury materials, fine design and state-of-the-art technology.

The latest updated models from 2021 onward are without doubt the nicest interiors, with the widescreen infotainment screen really enhancing the car's interior ambience. Material choice such as Alcantara also ensures you feel the Porsche sports car DNA and driver-focused feel.

Even early models don't feel that old, but you only get one digital dial in the instrument cluster, but it by no means makes the cabin feel old. Some keen drivers may actually prefer the higher dose of analogue.

A maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash test score was given to the Macan, ensuring it as a safe car. This is thanks to kit including:

  • Electronic stability control
  • Multiple airbags
  • Lane-keeping assistance
  • Blind-spot warning

Is the Porsche Macan right for me?

The Porsche Macan is a superb way of getting into a practical Porsche SUV that is more affordable than the larger Cayenne.

The BMW X3 offers a tad more practicality, as does the Mercedes-Benz GLC, but neither feel quite as dynamic and fun to drive as the Macan. The Range Rover Evoque also offers more practicality, and being a Land Rover will perform better when going off-road.

However, if you want a compact, exciting and dynamic performance SUV, the Porsche Macan shouldn't be overlooked.
