The Nissan Pulsar is a mid-sized hatchback that makes a great choice for families who need something spacious and affordable to run.

Those who don't want something as big as a Juke or Qashqai will want to consider a Pulsar, which offers a solid all-round driving experience and a ton of safety features. Entering Nissan's model range in 2014 and leaving four years later, the Pulsar never quite established itself like rivals such as the Ford Focus. However, it now represents great value on the used car market.

Engines and Driving Experience

Refinement is impressive in the Pulsar, which manages to soak up bumps with ease while ensuring road noise is kept to a minimum. You're probably better off looking at something like a Mazda3 if you want more driving thrills, although the grip and stability at speed is hardly poor. In the city, the Pulsar echoes comfort and is easy to park thanks to the good visibility.

A 1.2-litre and a 1.6-litre petrol engine are available, both of which are turbocharged. The smaller unit produces 115bhp and a good wedge of pulling-power from low revs, making it a keen performer. Better yet, it can return close to 56mpg. The larger engine produces a respectable 188bhp and can achieve 0 to 62mph in a brisk 7.7 seconds; expect up to 49.5mpg.

The sole 1.5-litre diesel engine isn't much to shout about. However, with its ability to return up to 78.5mpg, it'll make up for this at the fuel pumps. Unlike the petrol options, the diesel is not available with an automatic gearbox.

Practicality and Running Costs

Although the roofline slopes towards the rear of the car, there's still plenty of head room for passengers in the rear. At the time, the Pulsar had the longest wheelbase in its class (the space between the front and rear wheels). It's not much to brag about at the pub, but it does mean there's lots of leg room.

Boot space is suitably large as well, with 395 litres available with the rear seats left in place. It isn't as big as a Skoda Octavia's capacity (590 litres), but it beats the Volkswagen Golf of the same generation (380 litres). Fold the 60:40 split-folding seats flat and 1,395 litres of space makes itself available.

Annual premiums shouldn't be too offensive since the Pulsar occupies insurance groups 10 to 18. Any servicing requirements can be taken care of by your nearest Evans Halshaw Nissan retailer, who are more than happy to maintain older models.

Interior, Technology and Safety

The Pulsar doesn't skimp on equipment levels, with the entry-level Visia model offering Bluetooth, cruise control, air-conditioning and electric windows as standard. Step up to the Acenta model and you'll get luxuries such as LED running lights and dual-zone climate control.

Towards the top of the range you have the N-Connecta, which features sharp-looking 17-inch alloy wheels, and comes with LED headlights and part-leather seats. You can enjoy gadgets such as heated seats and electric folding mirrors, but you'll need to go for the top-spec Tekna for those.

Nissan didn't cut corners on safety bits either, with the Pulsar achieving a 5-star Euro NCAP crash test result in 2014. Available safety features include:
