If you're an eco-conscious person and you want to reduce your carbon footprint where you can, then the Nissan LEAF is a great option.

The LEAF is an all-electric hatchback that has been a revelation ever since its predecessor was introduced back in the late 2000s. With greater range and more toys as standard, this generation of LEAF has improved ten-fold and makes for a great alternative to traditional petrol or diesel-powered cars.

What are the main reasons to consider a Nissan LEAF, then? Here's a brief overview:

  • Zero emissions
  • Quiet and comfortable
  • Punchy performance
  • Usable real-world range
  • Polar bears will like you

Engines and Driving Experience

Opt for a LEAF and you can say farewell to the days of noisy engines and reverberating exhaust notes, because the batteries and electric motors offer a near-silent driving experience. Clearly geared towards comfort, the LEAF manages to absorb the worst of Britain's road surfaces without too much trouble, which is certainly welcome on the daily commute.

The standard LEAF comes with a 40kWh battery, which produces 148bhp and offers seamless acceleration, with 0 to 62mph taking 7.9 seconds. This version of the LEAF will get you 168 miles before needing some more juice.

A larger 62kWh battery is available, and makes the LEAF surprisingly brisk thanks to its 214bhp output. The 0 to 62mph sprint takes just 6.9 seconds, yet range increases to a very usable 239 miles. Considering traditional cars typically suffer from poorer fuel economy when they're fitted with a more powerful engine, the LEAF is mightily impressive.

Practicality and Running Costs

The inside of the LEAF is really spacious and airy for passengers, which ultimately makes for an enjoyable journey. Leg room is very good, and although the people in the back sit slightly higher up (because of the batteries underneath the floor), there's still plenty of head room.

Gaining access to the back is simple enough because the LEAF is only available with 5-doors. In addition, there are two sets of ISOFIX points in the rear bench, making it easy to fit and remove a child's seat. With 435 litres of boot space, you will have no issue doing the weekly food shop or transporting larger items, such as a pushchair or sports equipment.

Replenishing the batteries doesn't take as long as you'd think. Using rapid chargers, you can achieve 80% battery capacity in less than an hour. We'd recommend a home wall charger though, which means you can replenish the LEAF's batteries overnight or throughout the day (6.5 hours charge time for the 40kWh battery and 10 hours for the 62kWh).

Servicing and maintenance is more affordable because there are fewer moving mechanical parts, and can be undertaken at your nearest Evans Halshaw Nissan retailer.

Interior, Technology and Safety

The interior of the LEAF feels well-bolted together, and features some quality materials throughout. Although, the BMW i3 does feel more premium, but it also costs more as a result. Entry-level Acenta models come with air-conditioning, cruise control, electric windows, and a NissanConnect touchscreen that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Go up to the N-Connecta and you'll get luxuries such as 17-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass and parking sensors. The range-topping Tekna models come with full LED headlights, heated front seats and steering wheel, as well as a 7-speaker Bose stereo system.

Nissan haven't cut corners where safety is concerned, with the LEAF featuring the following:

  • Six airbags
  • Intelligent emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Cross traffic alert
  • Blind spot warning

Is the Nissan LEAF right for me?

Reducing your carbon footprint and choosing to step away from traditional engine-powered cars doesn't mean you have to compromise, which is ones of the reasons the LEAF has been such a success. There's plenty of toys, the range is good enough to justify it as an alternative, and it offers excellent levels of practicality. In short, the LEAF is a great choice, full stop.

Electric cars have grown in popularity during recent years, and this shows in the number we're seeing on Britain's roads. If you aren't too keen on the LEAF, then check out five of the best used electric cars and see what takes your fancy.
