Mercedes-Benz SLC Exterior, Front

The Mercedes-Benz SLC is a compact and sporty two-seat roadster, complete with an electronic folding hard-top roof. This is the first-generation of SLC, and was sold in Britain between 2016 and 2021.

Truthfully however, the SLC was simply a heavily revised version of the popular SLK rather than a totally new model, but that's no bad thing. Reasons to buy a used SLC include:

  • Automatic folding hard-top roof
  • Sporty, refined driving experience
  • Stylish looks
  • Prestige badge
  • Luxury car feel on the inside

Engines and Driving Experience

Mercedes-Benz SLC Exterior, Driving

Smooth is perhaps the best way to describe the driving experience of the SLC, particularly in reference to the 9-speed automatic gearbox, which is standard on all models except the entry-level version. It's comfortable and refined, too.

There are five different engine options that you'll encounter when looking for a used SLC:

  • SLC 180: 1.6-litre turbo 4-cylinder with 154bhp - the slowest
  • SLC 200: 2.0-litre turbo 4-cylinder with 181bhp - the most popular SLC and available with a manual
  • SLC 250d: 2.1-litre turbo 4-cylinder diesel with 201bhp - the cheapest to run with 60+ mpg possible
  • SLC 300: 2.0-litre turbo 4-cylinder with 254bhp - for those who want something truly sporty
  • SLC 43: 3.0-litre turbo V6 with 385bhp - the fastest accelerating version with 0 to 62 mph in just 4.7 seconds

Practicality and Running Costs

Mercedes-Benz SLC Exterior, Driving, Rear

Boot space is much better than you might think on the SLC. The total capacity is 355 litres - more than an A-Class family hatchback - but this falls to 225 litres with the roof down. Still, it's enough for a couple's luggage for a week away on a road trip. It fares well when compared to the competition, with the Audi TT offering 250 litres and a BMW Z4 of this era providing 310 litres with the roof up, and only 180 with it down.

In the cabin, there's actually quite a lot of storage space for a 2-seat sports car. There's a dedicated compartment for your sunglasses, a handy storage tray ahead of the gear lever, a big glovebox, two cupholders and a large cubby in the centre console.

Diesel models are actually very good on fuel and will be cheap to run in that sense, while the petrol models are a bit more expensive but not too bad. Insurance groups on all models are near the highest however, and servicing can be taken care of at Evans Halshaw dealerships if you're looking to keep costs down. Is the Mercedes-Benz SLC right for me?

A used Mercedes-Benz SLC is a car that will suit those who want to cruise around in comfort and luxury without spending an absolute fortune. The stylish looks and prestige badge on the front will give you the image you want, and the engines will make you smile if you fancy putting your foot down every now and again.

There are many options to consider when looking for a used two-seat sportscar. Obvious rivals to the SLC include the BMW Z4 and Audi TT, both of which match the SLC for style and prestige. Keen drivers will want to explore the possibility of a Porsche Boxster, while the Mazda MX-5 remains a much cheaper option but isn't as plush inside.
