Used Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV For Sale

The Mercedes-Benz GLE is a large luxury SUV that has been on sale in the UK since 2015. The second-generation GLE, which we're focusing on here, has been around since 2019 and brought with it a host of upgrades that really set it apart from the competition.

On the outside the GLE is a car that very clearly communicates style and class with its design, while the interior is quiet, comfortable and packed with gadgets and gismos. Reasons to consider buying a used GLE include:

  • Prestige styling and strong road presence
  • Supreme comfort and refinement
  • Excellent interior tech
  • 7-seater versions
  • All-wheel drive as standard

Engines and Driving Experience

Driving a GLE is very much a comfortable and refined experience, with wind and road noise kept to an absolute minimum. All used GLEs are all-wheel drive and only come with an automatic gearbox.

It's easy to get lost in the myriad of engine choices when looking for a used Mercedes GLE. To keep it simple:

  • GLE 300 d is the least powerful but most economical diesel version - it's also the most popular
  • GLE 350 d is another diesel that's a bit more powerful and a little worse on fuel
  • GLE 400 d is the most powerful but the least economical diesel option
  • GLE 350 de is a plug-in hybrid diesel with great fuel economy
  • GLE 450, GLE 53 AMG and GLE 63 S AMG variants have large petrol engines that can be expensive to run, but are really fast

Practicality and Running Costs

Used Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV Boot Space

The practicality credentials of the GLE SUV are enormous, as you'd expect from a car of this size. There are both 5-seat and 7-seat versions depending on your requirements, though 7-seaters will command a small price premium on the used market due to their desirability.

Boot space (accessed by an electrically operated tailgate) is measured at 690 litres, which is slightly more than the 645 litres mustered by the BMW X5, but can't match the outrageous 865 litres provided by the Audi Q7.

Fuel economy of 30-40mpg isn't too bad, but overall running costs aren't exactly cheap on a GLE. Replacement parts will be at the pricier end of the scale, but that should be expected for a car that costs £60,000+ when new. Costs can be kept down by having servicing and maintenance work completed at your nearest Evans Halshaw dealership, or for more specialist care you can take your GLE to Stratstone Mercedes-Benz.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Used Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV Interior, Dashboard

The interior of the GLE is very clearly an upmarket affair, with swathes of lush materials including man-made leather, oak wood and brushed aluminium.

Despite the materials being of such high quality, they play second fiddle to the technology inside the GLE, which is class-leading. In particular the MBUX infotainment system, with its dual 12.3-inch widescreen displays, is a highlight. It allows you to control the vehicle's settings and (many) functions by using the touchscreen, a laptop-style touchpad or even using voice commands.

Safety kit is extensive, leading to a 5-star score from the crash test experts at Euro NCAP. Standard features include:

  • Blind spot assist
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Speed limit assist
  • Traffic sign recognition

Is the Mercedes-Benz GLE right for me?

A used Mercedes-Benz GLE will suit anyone who is looking for a combination of refinement and practicality that only a luxury SUV can provide.

The German brand have done a good job of differentiating it from the competition by lavishing the GLE with next-generation technology and fantastic interior design. Plus, it has the desirable three-pointed star on the front.

Other luxury SUVs of a similar size that you should consider include the BMW X5 and Audi Q7, while the Volvo XC90 and Lexus RX are worthy contenders, too. The Tesla Model X is a fully-electric 7-seat option, while the Land Rover Discovery also has seven seats and is roomier than the GLE.
