The Mercedes-Benz CLA is a 4-door coupé, designed to offer a touch more style on the outside and further practicality on the inside than the A-Class hatchback on which it is based. With the second generation CLA, on sale in the UK since 2019, there's also a CLA Shooting Brake (estate) version, too.

Engines and Driving Experience
The engine range kicks off with the CLA 180 and CLA 200, both of which are equipped with a 1.33-litre turbo 4-cylinder petrol engine, with 134bhp and 161bhp respectively. These provide ample power around town and get around 45mpg. The CLA 180 in particular is suitable for younger drivers thanks to lower insurance costs.
The most popular engine option with used CLA models is the 2.0-litre diesel, which is both quick (0 to 62mph takes just 7.2 seconds) and efficient (up to 55mpg), and is badged CLA 220 d. There's a plug-in hybrid too, named the CLA 250 e, capable of travelling up to 44 miles on electric power before transitioning to petrol/electric hybrid driving.
For increased performance you can opt for the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 and CLA 45, both of which come standard with all-wheel drive to harness the extreme power produced by their engines.
Practicality and Running Costs
Despite all the talk of sportiness and sleek coupé lines, the CLA Coupé is actually pretty practical. At 460 litres in size, the boot is a good size - larger than the one found on a BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé - but hatchbacks like the A-Class do have a much larger opening because of a taller rear end. Thankfully, the CLA Shooting Brake estate version offers an even more usable 505 litres of space.
Legroom is improved over its hatchback stablemate, and Mercedes-Benz have done a good job of maintaining a reasonable amount of headroom in the back even with the sloping roofline.

Interior, Technology and Safety
Prospective buyers of a used CLA will be wowed by the interior fit and finish. The first thing you'll notice is the two screens that adorn the top of the dashboard, housing both a digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system named MBUX.
AMG Line is the standard specification, and comes with a multifunction sports steering wheel, heated front seats, keyless entry and start, automatic climate control, cruise control and a wireless charging pad for your smartphone. Sat nav is also standard across the range.
Safety technology has filtered down from the top-of-the-range S-Class, and the CLA is fitted with a number of advanced safety systems such as:
