The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has long been heralded as one of the very best compact saloon cars in the world. This generation, sold new from 2014 to 2021, is also available as an estate, a convertible and as a coupé, meaning there's always going to be a used example that suits your lifestyle.

It excels at comfort and technology, which makes it an excellent long-distance cruiser. The C-Class also has enough room inside and a big enough boot to be considered a family car, especially in saloon or estate guise. You'll want to buy a Mercedes C-Class if you are looking for:

  • Classy exterior styling
  • Premium interior feel
  • Excellent technology features
  • Quiet and refined driving experience
  • Strong long-distance cruising ability

By far the most popular engine choice in the C-Class is the 2.0-litre diesel, badged as a C 220 d. It offers brisk acceleration - 0 to 62 mph takes just 6.9 seconds - while returning around 50mpg on average. You can up the ante further by going for the C 300 d, which, with an extra 50bhp, lops a full second off the 0 to 62 mph time with only a small penalty in terms of fuel economy.

C 200 petrol models are also widely available as used cars. These are cheaper to buy but are slower and worse on fuel than the diesels.

With this generation of C-Class, there's also a myriad of hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, which employ the assistance of electric motors and battery packs to reduce fuel consumption.

More than 90% of used C-Class models are diesel and petrol automatics, which suit its luxury-car driving style, so you'll be hard-pressed to find a manual version.

Practicality and Running Costs

The most practical version of the C-Class is of course the estate, which provides a sizeable 490 litres of boot space - around 10 percent more than the saloon. In the saloon, you'll need to be careful to select the right model if you want to put the rear seats down from time to time, as only the Sport and AMG Line versions get a split-folding rear seat.

The coupé and convertible suffer in terms of cargo capacity due to their sleeker bodystyles, but even those models can seat two adults and two children in relative comfort. The back seats are pretty roomy in saloon and estate models, with good head and legroom for rear passengers.

Diesel versions are extraordinarily efficient on the motorway, keeping fuel expenditure down. Road tax prices depend on the year it was first registered, so check before you buy.

Servicing costs will be in line with other premium brands like Audi and BMW, and can be reduced by having your maintenance completed at Evans Halshaw dealerships.

Upon launch, the C-Class' cabin was widely praised for being beautifully designed and well put together, and minor updates over the car's lifetime were enough to keep it fresh and elegant.

Standard equipment has always been a strong suit of the C-Class, with a DAB radio, air conditioning, cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity found on all models. Unless you find an entry-level SE model, you'll get sat nav thrown in, too. Look out for cars equipped with additional packs that add luxuries like a panoramic sunroof and electric seats.

Safety kit kicks off with a reversing camera and ends with a bunch of electronic systems such as:

  • Seven airbags
  • Anti-skid control
  • Attention assist
  • Forward collision warning

All these features helped the C-Class score a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating when tested.

Is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class right for me?

The C-Class is suitable for many different types of people, owing to its multiple bodystyles, engine options and specifications. Motorway mile munchers will appreciate the refinement and comfort, while families are well catered for with the estate. Fancy something a bit special? The C-Class coupé and convertible are super stylish and good to drive.

Rivals to the C-Class come in the form of the BMW 3 Series (in saloon and estate form), and the BMW 4 Series coupé and convertible. Elsewhere in the market, the Audi A4, Jaguar XE and Lexus IS are all worthy contenders in the battle for small premium saloon car greatness.
