Engines and Driving Experience
Award-winning EcoBoost engine technology plays a large part in the petrol engine choices on offer in the Ford Grand C-MAX range. The 1.0-litre 125bhp EcoBoost is the pick of the bunch, offering respectable economy with almost 40mpg achievable.
Those wanting a bit more economy should look at the diesel alternatives, especially the 1.6 TDCi Zetec, which can deliver up to 60mpg.
As far as the driving experience goes in the Ford Grand C-MAX, it takes after all other Ford MPVs, offering a surprisingly good experience, which is very car-like. It feels rather like a Ford Fiesta or Focus, with little body roll, which is excellent praise for a sizable MPV with a tall roofline.
Practicality and Running Costs
Seven seats is the Ford Grand C-MAX's stand out feature, along with its sliding rear doors. This makes getting in and out easier, and good for tight spaces in car parks, meaning little ones are less likely to ding the doors, or doors of other parked cars.
Bootspace ranges from a minimum of 432 litres and rises to 1,723 litres with the rear seats folded.
Running costs are affordable, this is a Ford after all, so running the Grand C-MAX isn't going to break the bank. With economy of up to 60mpg and relatively inexpensive service costs, the Grand C-MAX is ideal for families and those who maybe have had a Ford Fiesta or Focus beforehand.
Interior, Technology and Safety
The interior is spacious considering the Grand C-MAX is smaller than the larger S-MAX and Galaxy MPVs in the Ford range. It does look a little dated in relation to these cars, being first introduced in 2011, so updates have been minimal.
Screens are small and not digital like in some later models. They are still clear though, and the cabin is complemented by decent technology as the standard Zetec model comes with DAB radio, Bluetooth, a heated windscreen, 16-inch alloy wheels and air-conditioning.
Previous generation models achieved a five star EURO NCAP safety rating, but since the latest tougher safety measures, this was dropped to three stars. This was mainly because the Grand C-Max hadn't kept up with the updated safety assist category.
Is the Ford Grand C-Max right for me?
If you require a seven-seat MPV that isn't overly large - like the Ford Galaxy, then the Grand C-MAX could well be the perfect solution.
It may lack more up-to-date features, but this means the used cars out there are even more attractive when it comes to getting more car for your money.
It is always going to be a concern if a car suffers in the safety ratings, but as mentioned the Grand C-MAX has only missed out due to tougher new rankings. The newer and larger Ford Galaxy and S-MAX are therefore the models you would need to look at if you want more up to date safety features.
