Engines and Driving Experience
A trio of petrol engines are available for the Z4 which include:
- 2.0-litre, badged sDrive 20i with 194bhp/returning circa 40mpg
- 2.0-litre, badged sDrive 30i with 255bhp/returning circa 39mpg
- 3.0-litre, badged M40i with 335bhp/returning circa 35mpg
The entry-level sDrive 20i takes 6.6 seconds to do the 0 to 62mph dash, which will be plentiful for most, whilst the sDrive 30i drops to just 5.3 seconds. The pick of the range is the M40i, which devours the 0 to 62mph sprint in just 4.5 seconds - M car territory figures. This is thanks to all Z4s featuring an 8-speed automatic transmission.
To drive, the Z4 feels nice and tight as you'd expect from a BMW, whilst also being grown-up, classy and refined. It may not be as fine or sharp as an M car, but the M40i places itself with other textbook roadster and sports cars from the likes of Porsche and Audi.
Practicality and Running Costs
Being a sports car, practicality isn't going to be epic, but in the Z4, it's not bad by any means.
The Z4 faces stiff competition in the form of the Porsche Boxster and Audi TT Roadster, but you'll find a bit more space in the BMW, along with good sized storage spaces and a decent sized glovebox.
And no matter whether you have the roof up or down in the Z4, the boot size remains unchanged - it also offers a little more space than its competition, with 281 litres on offer. The Audi offers just one litre less, with 280 litres, whilst the Boxster's three boot spaces add up to 275 litres.

Interior ambiance of the Z4 is very nice, and you're not going to complain spending time behind the wheel due to the smart digital instrument cluster. There is also a crisp infotainment display which is part of this enhanced BMW era of car, which goes toe to toe with Audi. This, teamed with the overall feel of the Z4, ensures you're behind the wheel of something premium.
