BMW X3 Front

BMW first introduced the X3 back in 2003, complementing its X Series SUV portfolio. Here we are looking specifically at the third-generation BMW X3, which was first available in 2017, receiving a facelift in 2021.

With SUV popularity showing no signs of slowing, the X3 has become a great choice for those looking for a premium SUV with the sought-after driving dynamics, practicality and prestige that the BMW brand offers.

The X3 is a family SUV that sits pretty much in the middle of the X Series range. As a used purchase it offers:

  • Handsome looks
  • BMW badge kudos
  • Plenty of space and practicality
  • A strong choice of engines
  • Car-like dynamics and feel

Engines and Driving Experience

BMW X3 Rear

Petrol, diesel and hybrid engine choices are available in the BMW X3 range.

Engine choice includes:

  • xDrive 2.0-litre petrol (badged 20i SE) with 184bhp
  • xDrive 3.0-litre petrol (badged M40i) with 360bhp
  • xDrive 2.0-litre diesel (badged 20d) with 190bhp
  • xDrive 3.0-litre diesel (badged 30d) with 286bhp or (badged M40d) 340bhp

The entry-level 2.0-litre petrol will return just under 40mpg, whilst the 2.0-litre diesel offers more economy, returning around the 50mpg mark.

For those wanting added thrills, the M40i and M40d get the M Performance treatment, meaning high-power whilst still keeping comfort, economy and a degree of understated class. These models can go from 0 to 62mph in 4.8 and 4.9 seconds respectively. The rest of the range take between 5.7 and 8.3 seconds - meaning no matter the X3, it will not feel slow.

Plug-in hybrid models are also available and can return 149mpg, with 30 miles of pure electric range.

Practicality and Running Costs

BMW X3 Boot

Being a family SUV, the BMW X3 offers plenty of space and practicality. It is actually as big as the first-generation BMW X5 for reference.

Four adults can sit in excellent comfort in the X3, with the middle rear seat only really designed for kids, or an adult for a short journey. As for boot space, the X3 can swallow all the usual family clutter with ease thanks to 550 litres - increasing to 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded, for a van-like load area.

As for running costs, petrol models will return just under 40mpg, whilst diesel models offer just under 50mpg. PHEV versions offer the most economy with up to 149mpg but cost significantly more in the first place. Servicing varies and can be completed at Evans Halshaw, but we would recommend Stratstone BMW for more specialist care.

BMW X3 Interior

Climb aboard any BMW X3 and it's text book BMW, offering a high-quality fit and finish with a premium ambience.

Pre-facelift cars feature digital-effect dials, which blend analogue features - they still look and feel great and are a fine balance, and work well with the familiar central screen infotainment system, which is easy to use and features crisp, clear graphics.

Facelifted 2021 cars get fully-digital dials, with updated infotainment, falling in-line with the rest of the interior enhancements of new BMW models. No matter which X3 you choose, kit includes DAB, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat nav, LED headlights, Bluetooth and Harman Kardon (Available as an upgrade).

Safety has also been shown high priority, as the X3 features a full five-star Euro NCAP score thanks to the features below appearing in the range:

  • Stability control
  • Automatic parking system
  • Acoustic parking sensors
  • Tyre pressure monitoring
  • Cruise control
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Cross-traffic warning
  • Blindspot warning system

Is the BMW X3 right for me?

If you are after a family SUV, then the BMW X3 should definitely be on your short list thanks to great practicality, technology, style and performance.

However, there are some great alternatives worth considering and checking out too, such as the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. Both these SUVs offer similar classy styling and wonderfully crafted interiors - it will all be decided on personal preference really.

You could also look at the Range Rover Velar, which is a stunning SUV and has the kudos of being a Range Rover, meaning it will be epic off-road and also brilliant on it too.
