BMW 5 Series Pair

The BMW 5 Series has been a sought-after large saloon car for BMW since the early 1970s. An estate body style, otherwise known as a Touring was also introduced in the early 1990s.

Below, we will be taking a look at the seventh generation, which was first offered for sale in 2016. It offers all the enhanced luxury and comfort you would expect from a car of this nature, whilst still providing the renowned driving experience that sets many BMW models apart from their competitors.

On the face of it, the 5 Series features:

  • A superb driving experience
  • Excellent equipment levels
  • BMW badge kudos
  • Economical and high performing engine choice
  • An ultra-practical Touring version

Engines and Driving Experience

BMW 5 Series Exterior

It's no surprise that diesel engines are popular with large cars, and when the standard 520d offers 58mpg, and a 0 to 62mph time of 7.2 seconds, it's easy to see why it's a popular engine choice within the 5 Series. There is also a mix of slightly larger diesel engines available, as well as petrol versions which mirror their diesel counterparts.

The M55Oi xDrive will attract those wanting immense power and all-wheel drive from their 5 Series. It's essentially a detuned BMW M5 and can go from 0 to 62mph in a supercar taunting 3.8 seconds. It can only muster 26mpg though, which isn't bad for a what is essentially one of the fastest large saloons/estates available.

You can also find 5 Series hybrid models too, which are not only quick, but can return between 150mpg and 200mpg.

No matter which 5 Series you choose, they have an uncanny ability to be ultra-comfortable, but with a few button presses can become quite the driver's car on a typical UK B-road, something which some competitors struggle with.

Practicality and Running Costs

BMW 5 Series Boot

Being a large premium car, the BMW 5 Series offers a lot of generous space for driver and passengers, with a large 530-litre boot, which is similar in size to competitors, although a Jaguar XF and Mercedes-Benz E-Class offer a little more with 540 litres.

570 litres is on offer in the Touring, increasing to 1,700 litres with the rear seats folded flat. This is still smaller than the Mercedes-Benz E-Class however, which offers 1,820 litres with its rear seats folded.

As for running costs, the economical engine choices ensure that most 5 Series models should see between 40mpg and 50mpg with ease, which is excellent for a car of this size. It's worth setting quite a bit more aside for upkeep of the 5 Series performance models however.

Servicing can be completed at any Evans Halshaw retailer, although those wanting a main dealers BMW service record should check out any Stratstone BMW retailer.

Interior, Technology and Safety

BMW 5 Series Interior

As a car made for long distance mileage munching, the BMW 5 Series acts as a superb place to spend time. This is because each 5 Series offers a striking digital cockpit, which has been enhanced even further in the facelifted versions that were on sale from 2020.

There is also a smart central screen that incorporates the excellent BMW iDrive, where you can access all of the car's settings and infotainment.

Overall, interior ambiance is also excellent, with soft touch materials and leather throughout, as well as refined controls and details to really let the driver and passengers know they are in a luxury, executive car.

And with the 5 Series created for being able to undertake large mileage without breaking sweat, you'd hope the safety was up to scratch too. As expected, BMW made sure the 5 Series lived up to its name with a five-star safety rating awarded by Euro NCAP.

Is the BMW 5 Series right for me?

The BMW 5 Series is a bit of a Swiss army knife, as it has two sides to its character.

Firstly, this premium saloon/estate can munch motorway miles and the like with great ease, whilst ensuring occupants are kept comfortable and safe. Then, when the roads get twisty and the driver fancies a bit of engagement, the 5 Series becomes quite the dynamic driving force.

Of course, it's not going to match the poise and nature of a typical sports car, but the 5 Series offers much more than most saloons/estates, with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive available too.

Those not bothered by driving dynamics and who just want luxury will probably find the Mercedes-Benz E-Class more suitable, whilst the Jaguar XF is also worth a look.
